I think the Switch 2 will still be a 100m+ seller but won't sell as much as the Switch 1. The launch sale speed is what happens when you actually have stock at launch and people don't need to watch trackers 24/7 if they want to get one before year 3.

Nintendo can really release anything now, their consumer base is pretty much religious at this point.

The two big switch emu groups were likely nonstarts for the switch 2 anyway. ryujinx team was very obviously just in it to get bought out, and yuzu had a fucking patreon. it'll take some time.

As someone who hasn't bought a Nintendo product since 2010, I was considering getting a Switch 2. It's just nicely released between console gens. Everyone knew PS5 was an incremental upgrade that will be quickly replaced by PS6, same with Switch 1 after seeing the whole Wii U thing. I refrained from buying Switch, Ps5, or Xbox Series X; may as well get a Switch 2 while waiting for PS6/Xb2x

This is largely driven by availability.
Switch and PS5 were pretty much sold out everywhere at release. Had they made more consoles they would have sold more in a month.

Sony places sales at "over 160 million" since obviously, manufactured =/= sold
The original Switch is sitting at ~152.12 million (as of March 31st, 2025, 8 years + 4 weeks of sales), meaning it has to sell ~8,516,885 units before ending production to completely overtake the PS2. Last year, the Switch sold around 11 million units, and we know that it's going to be on store shelves with the Switch 2 as a cheaper alternative for at least 2-3 years. It also makes sense to keep making Switch games with Switch 2 Edition updates to try and cover both platforms.

The Switch has also never received a permanent price cut, only individual store sales. The closest thing to one was when the original Switch was replaced by the Mariko model, which has a better battery, but at the same price, and the cheaper, more limited Switch Lite.

Yes, their sales are consolidated as they are the same platform. Nintendo also considers the Game Boy Color to be the same platform as the original Game Boy, treating it like how they treat the New Nintendo 3DS to the Nintendo 3DS, or the Nintendo DSi to the Nintendo DS. They're closer to pro models than true successors. Similarly, all the PS2 models are consolidated there, the slim isn't separate to the original fat model.

The Switch 2 would be considered separate to the Switch.

Nintendo did the right call on overstocking every single outlet so scalpers can get fucked.
