Ideally Maelle/Alicia would let them be and step out but is saving her and her family worth the cost? Renoir and the others don't even consider that, the only regrets they have is destroying the last "living" reminder of their son (specifically Verso's soul, not the painted copy).
I wish game actually tried to take on that subject in greater detail (it addresses it but rarely and without using that to enhance the conflict) but it might've been too much. I also thought that the ending where Maelle stays inside would end up with the painting destroyed by outside forces. Come to think of it, why is that not a solution? Would that cause all the people inside to be trapped/die?
