I've heard many things about Funger, both about how it's a all-time classic and how also absolute bullshit it can be, but I never have gotten a solid opinion on it. Is it worth trying to play and getting into, or is it just masochism in video game form?

doesn't hurt to try it, you're coming in from a good perspective if you're blind about its contents. people who talk about "all time classics" that are less than a decade old sniffed too much video essay juice

I've heard only three things about it.
>lots of rape
>You can go die in a well
>You always have a 50/50 chance of dying.
Does that sound right?

you'll get more out of it by watching a YouTube video covering the lore
the game itself is jank

Unless you're in the mood for survival horror, where you're burning runs to find routes and most efficient resource hoarding, you're probably going to bounce off. It's a decent time but trying to play it like an RPG is a miserable time.
And even then, it's not a great survival horror. Contact combat means you can't really juke, enemy patterns and event triggers require borderline writing them down cause there's too fucking many (triple that for the sequel), levels are flat corridors and at the end of the day it's still an RPGmaker game, it's just a surprisingly functional attempt at survival horror.

So play all the classic REs and SHs first and if you fucking love it and are willing to put up with jank, you'll like Funger.

>lots of rape
there's SOME rape, but it's no h-game.
>you can go die in a well
there's worse places to die in.
>you always have a 50/50 chance of dying
only on certain enemies and only if you aren't guarding. aside from that yes theres quite a bit of RNG, even for the layout of the dungeon. spend your first couple runs getting the hang of the different layouts and where everything is to maximize efficiency since there are time-sensitive events (very obvious when you stumble across them)

That's foreboding.

Odd, I've heard the sequel is wayyy more easier to enter into than the first one.

definetely way, way easier, but a very different product altogether. It doesn't have as much of the cosmic horror misery pazazz of the first, it's also fucking unfinished and miro 'Soon TM' haaverinen has yet to publish an update that basically doubles the game's content, but it still has a lot more meat to sink your teeth into with over a dozen pretty interesting characters and much more lore.

its a great game with a super oppressive atmosphere and even though it draws a ton from berserk it does enough to stand on its own feet, spend your runs accumulating meta knowledge and avoid mods and fandom like the plague. 2nd game is also good but fails to deliver on the battle royale it promises

i found it to be very fun and loved the gameplay. starting out knowing nothing and getting bulched but learning to break the game in half was very fun. it's all knowledge and every additional piece of it pushes you a little further.

Itโ€™s pretty fun and presents an interesting setting. The big deterrent is that the difficulty curve is brutal at the start and then the game becomes a cake walk when you either get party members or figure out how empty scrolls work (donโ€™t look it up if you care).

I'm pretty proficent at 2 but I'm trying to get into 1. Is this a good starting point for clearing out the first floor and the left graveyard/storage area or should I go again?

It's the kind of game that you bang your head into and try shit
The lore and secrets or other easter eggs are overall interesting but whether you like the basic gameplay depends on the person

It's probably good steamer bait, but it's too gross for me, and the mods don't like my fetishes.

If you like turn-based RPGs, Dark Fantasy Horror settings ala Berserk, your actions having consequences on your play-through, and brutal combat, then yeah you'll like it. I recommend getting the mod on Nexus mods that lets you get the individual character endings in the normal mode and not in terror and starvation mode. No idea why the developer ever did that, Terror and Starvation mode in my opinion is really really brutal and the endings aren't worth the hassle to play it except for maybe Knight because she's pretty much the most OP character in the game, save for maybe late game Enki if you merge him with a resurrected corpse. If you're a creative writer / worldbuilding I think it's worth getting into. Again the game isn't that hard if you pick the knight and just get the reign of the new gods mod off of nexus that makes those character endings attainable in normal mode. Keep in mind normal mode is like really really hard and Terror and Starvation mode is like brutally unfair and for the most hardcore of hardcore players.

OP here, thanks for all the opinions! This game does sound up my alley, I already torture myself through games as is, so I'll be giving it a shot! Once again, thank you all!
