this is actually incorrect, SOVL is just competency and nothing more. this is the reason why it transcends aesthetics, and why old games can have sovl, it's because they were made by artists that got to show their creativity and be competent in the face of constraints; modern day games have much less constraints, and similar to modern art you have to REALLY understand technical limitations just to be capable of appreciating it. (but this doesn't mean that modern games have SOVL that you're just missing: a lot of problems are solved, and it's very easy to make things that look 'good'.)

Either it's a pixel brush replicating paint brushes (bristles don't usually touch a page the same way, leaving small lines on the side,) or it could be someone doing many quick, light lines on the page, and since most people don't keep their hand at the exact same elevation at all times. There can be part of the line that dissappears.

There is a much simpler and better way to define soul.
It is passion. Passion is visible and senseable. A passion for what they are doing can be felt and it is this passion that amplifies the enjoyment of the work, it is a multiplier. The reverse is also true and a multiplier as well, when there is no passion everything feels mechanical, you can sense that it is merely a product designed to be sold with no greater thought behind it besides that marketing told them it will sell.
Passion can also be applied to your image. It is not the flaws and imperfections or lack thereof, it is that the left was drawn by hand because they wanted to draw a circle while the right was a circle tool because they had to put a circle there.

This definition is not clear or concise, it doesn't get into the meat of what makes the circle on the right soulless, it's just a couple paragraphs of flowery feelings.

A clear and concise definition is that Soul is what you get when the output of human effort is not formulaic. People can tell when things are done according to exacting guidelines, the sense for it comes from your gut once you're exposed to enough of it. Formulaic work is common in the industry today since the bulk of developers in every department are professionally educated from the same syllabus.

SOVL isn't about being shit it's about being imperfect
like, I'd argue sonic adventure has SOUL because it's being held together with duct tape and dreams, but mario 64 has SOUL because there weren't any real rules or conventions on how to make a platforming game in 3D and they just freeballed it. they got a lot right but they still had things that I'd generously describe as "good enough" like the camera controls or some straight dogass like a few stars or even really the entire second ice world.
the reason AAA cinematic sad dad third person survival action games or massively multiplayer GaaS looter shooters are treated as soulless is because you probably thought of at least four different games from those description alone. it all feels designed by committee, with any chance of failure gutted in favor of aspects a bean counter ran spreadsheets on to make sure were capable of maximizing player retention and brand awareness etc.

I don't draw and don't ever plan on drawing.
