I don't agree with the take and it is mostly shitposting, but Awakening does break pretty hard if you understand how to properly build units. It ends up playing itself and exposes how shallow the maps are. Combine with how the child mechanic effectively replaces the cast you were growing up thanks to how stat stacked they are, you end up with a FE game that doesn't really play to FE's strengths: a fast-paced game where you grow to love the units you build throughout the adventure. There isn't really that great a story to carry the shallow gameplay, and if you are a fan of Archanean lore it is actually infuriating how much retconning it does for no good reason.

Awakening is not a game greater than the sum of its parts, which is essentially what carries most FE's past their jank and self-sabotage as SRPGs.

The faults of Awakening aren't really that hard to gleam from, you don't need a YouTuber to tell you that. Hell, trying to play the game aggressively is heavily unoptimal thanks to the absurd enemy and stat bloat later maps get. Priam's Spotpass map has to be joke on behalf of the devs on how stupid they designed the game. It's why Galeforce strats is actually overrated, with how many maps are actually rout over kill boss, the Dark Mage + Vantage + Vengeance + Nosferatu build is likely to last you longer than trying to chain kills and leave your turtle pack of stat boosts.

And if you actually paid attention to the exposition dumps of Shadow Dragon/New Mystery, you understand just how cerebral palsy-brained the actual lore and plot setup Awakening is. I like how Melee accidentally represented him pretty well. He's weak to the point of being a liability and his only attacking option is a flimay sword. Playing to his strengths is also pretty satisfying in both games despite the player having access to much better characters in almost any circumstance.
In Melee he's got the OHKO on Puff with up B, and in early-mid game fe6 his rapier comes in clutch to one-shot some cavs and to function as the one accurate hit needed to finish off annoying nomads.

The actual main reason why Galeforce is overrated has to do with the fact that it requires you to spend 15 levels in a class with bad offenses and bulk, on top of Awakening actually remembering to put anti flier tools. Robin is the only person who can feasibly get Galeforce during the campaign on higher difficulties because you can abuse the higher exp floor to pick it up before enemy quality spikes.
If you want to play aggressively, then use stuff like Rescue, Deliverer, Olivia and characters with reasonable access to Hero for Sol or Dark Mage. Awakening's final map is trash if you try to wait it out too. That's why so many people giga forge brave weapons on a non dark mage and/or fish for Chrom Dual Strikes.

I'm trying out Fire Emblem for the first time. I was recommended FE7 as a good starting point. I'm up to chapter 18 and I'm feeling like I must be missing some important point. Every battle seems to just consist of pounding a horde of braindead weak units that never pose any actual threat, followed by a boss whose stats are so much higher than anything I feel forced to have the one heavily armored dude slowly wear him down to low HP since everyone else can at most survive a single hit from the boss (meaning they would die on the enemy's turn if he's allowed to get one).

GBA FE is mediocre. 8 is the best of the three, but they're all kinda weak. I'd start with 3 DS or even the Switch titles. After you grow appreciation for it by playing better entries, you might even go back just to see the older titles out of curiosity, to see how the franchise developed. But there actually is a justification to train all those benchwarmers. There are in-game rankings which measure various aspects of how you played the game, like how many turns you took and how money you have left. Gaining level-ups is also among these rankings and you need to waste a ton of exp on useless units to get the best ranking.
