I'll give it a pass if they're naming something a bit more obscure/distinct, since identifying by that may be the only way to quickly explain what the game is even like.
Like, if I see "inspired by Romancing Saga", my interest might be raised, because I see why you would say that, instead of just explaining what you are, because that's an explanation that probably takes a paragraph.
If it's just some historic popular thing, though, that's a turn off.
