I don't. People in this thread will deny it, but the vast majority of video game localizations today are totally fine. For any big budget game from a known studio, the localization is done in-house. It's telling that the only examples people can give of actually bad localizations are garbage gacha slop games that no mentally well person would play in the first place.
Also, the loudest opponents of localizations are brown ESLs who learned English through watching anime subs

"Localization" is not the problem, -bad- localization is the problem.
Direct translation is bad because nuance and context can be lost quickly.
Identity-politics-poisoned localization is bad because nuance and context can be lost quickly.
A good localization preserves both the nuance and the context, and if it does it correctly, it can get away with dramatic changes to the script while equating, or even improving upon, the source material.

Fiction translation is bottom of the barrel translation job. Every competent translator works in business, public sector, law, academia or similar field where translations need to be accurate and require precision. People who translate fiction either were not competent enough for better translation jobs, or they got passion for specifically translating fiction, and the latter group has a lot of failed writers and activist types who want to insert their own text into fiction.
This is not a new phenomenon either, mind you. The original Swedish translation of Lord of the Rings for example included the translator altering the text at some places to "fix it". Tolkien personally condemned the translation as shit, and the translator got so mad about it that he later became a Tolkien hater who tried to incite Satanic panic about Tolkien's writings in Sweden.

I learned moonrunes and the localizers often fail to translate correctly, and sometimes they just give up and make shit up or cut out large portions of content they dislike.

Later I became a translation autist and got really involved with arguments on /lit/ about different translations of the Iliad and Odyssey, but got bored after a while (Lattimore is still the best btw).

AI translations are already generally better than google translate and are improving every year.
I translate manga and games for myself all the time with AI and generally have few errors when comparing to translator translations. I can also use any language so doesn't matter if the stuff is Japanese, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, etc. I would say Chinese is the hardest i've seen to OCR though.
At this point even if all the translators and localizers disappeared tomorrow I could still play Jap games and read manga as long as I can get the raws.

I doubt translators have more than 5-10 years before becoming mostly pointless and that is being generous. General fear of AI among normies is the only thing still saving them, but once companies realize how much money they are saving they'll adjust the normie programming to support AI translation.

Now, mind you, when having these discussions, we're almost exclusively speaking about Japanese to English. If you don't speak English as a native language, no one actually cares what you think on this matter. You're a secondary to the discussion.

People will look back to the past and shit all over TL notes in old fansubs, but it was the best way to learn cultural context for customs/puns/idioms/wordplay and the like, and was especially useful since a lot of these are shared by different works coming from the same country. One example of positive localization is Turnabout Storyteller in Ace Attorney 6.

In the Japanese script they had to dance around directly referring to it in the dialogue because alcohol is considered a ratings bump but in English they could just jump over that because for a T-rated game they wouldn't step over any lines just to acknowledge someone drinking alcohol.

Okay, let's say we have a Japanese game in which a character likes to eat Takoyaki a lot. The majority of people in the west who play the game have no idea what Takoyaki is. Therefore, it's prudent to change their like of Takoyaki with a food that people will recognize. This is done for two reasons. Firstly, to maintain immersion for the player. Secondly, to preserve the original feel of the game. When the devs decided upon Takoyaki as the character's food, they did so because it's a common food people in Japan would recognize. If a player doesn't recognize this and has to ask what a Takoyaki is, that's not something the devs intended.

The translator has to use their knowledge of the source and target cultures and have a degree of creativity in order to produce an equivalent effect in the reader.

I saw this happen to my brother in an unrelated case. The guy was smart, with a good job in a relatively complex field, but after his wife filed for divorce, something happened to him and he became completely impossible to reason with.
