Please convince me this isn't better than Chrono Trigger bros, i'm playing it right now and it's so amazing but i don't want it to surpass my favorite RPG.

I have only played Phantasy Star 1 and 2 and for the year the games came out, 1987-1989, there was nothing better, not even on PC. Better than FF1 and DQ1-2-3 by a large margin too, but surpassed by most Jrpg's released on the Snes. As for Phantasy Star 3 and 4, I've never played those, so I have no idea.

Limitations are actually hilarious in IV. If you level up too much the game starts to go insane with character stats. Like Wren would gain int and sometimes a character would actually lose stats.

I think it's more just that most of it flew under the radar. It's hard to stand out when your game is exclusive to the platform that isn't getting Dragon Quest or Squaresoft RPGs during what was their golden era. Phantasy Star 4 just wasn't enough to push the needle when the SNES was already solidifying itself as the JRPG machine. (The awful western cover art the series was cursed with doesn't help either.)

The story is what makes it good. It took the basic rpg formula but went scifi instead of high fantasy allowing them to be much more creative in developing the story. Gameplay isn't anything amazing. Basic turn based combat but the tech merging is still one of the coolest things an rpg has ever done and even newer games that have tried something similar have failed to be as good.

- The battle system is fast and zippy, great graphics style and battle effects
- Hidden combination attacks between different party members
- There aren't many status attacks, but instant death attacks are actually useful and you get a fair amount to use
- The music and sounds are stellar
- You don't need knowledge of the previous games, the story will fill you in and it's a good one
- The anime story panels are cool
- This game doesn't fuck around with pacing, you will always be pushing forward
- There's not really a grind (You might explore a dungeon once > escape > rest > go back in and find the boss)

2 takes a lot more dedication to play through. All the dungeons are labyrinths and you trigger a random battle every 4-6 steps so it's easy to lose track of the direction you were headed.

I recently played PS1 and PS2 on their original English versions. PS1 I did like, it has the same shortcomings many RPGs at the time did but it also does a lot of things right. It's a fun dungeon crawler and JRPG that gives you a solar system to explore and discover things, not quite fully linear either. The only major flaw I'd say is the penultimate boss is such a big difficulty spike (He literally just spams a strong AoE spell the entire time you fight him) that you have to grind a bit to get your HP up enough to survive more than two turns, but I can forgive that.

PS2 felt terrible though. Very high encounter rate, slow battle transitions like FFIX, some enemies can ambush you and delete your party before you act (Especially on the last floor of a dungeon), there were a lot of things I didn't like about the game to the point where I set it down and never came back. The presentation was nice, but it just wasn't as fun to play as PS1.

I wouldn't consider it better than CT, but it's a great game non the less, you should stick it out and see it through to the end. The pay off is much greater if you beat 1 & 2 before.
Also since we're on the topic, 3 gets too much hate. It's pretty good and has good replayability with the generations gimmick.
And now for the part I'm really gonna get shit on, if the first three games feel too grindy, use a patch to double/quadruple the meseta/exp. There's a reason they exist for those three games. 4 is well balanced enough not to need one.

It's mostly just 2. I assume there's a patch that reduces the encounter rate too.

Come on now 3 is actual garbage and was barely even finished at the time.

I'll grant you the "Generations" story branching is compelling, but the graphics, music, and especially the battle system is fucking awful.

The battle menu is completely nonsensical, literally the FIRST enemies in the game can inflict poison on you which totally stops you recovering HP.

I just can't get into 1, and 2 is obscenely boring with a super slow battle system paired with a high encounter rate and bad sounds.

The only good thing about PS4 is the manga panel style presentation.
The gameplay/level design/writing is really no better than PS2 (which wasn't very good), and the music is quite awful.

-For megadrive RPG's you're much better off playing the 2 Lunar games.
-For Scifi RPG's you're better off playing Konami's Lagrange Point.
