It was the first god of war game I've played and I had a blast back then.

They were 8/10 games overall, I don't understand where the hate comes from.

I liked the simple hack and slash of the original trilogy, also liked the fact that they respected my time.
Meanwhile, in gow 2018 you spend most of your time running around and riding a boat on an awful map, has a shitton of bad side quests that you have to do so you can get good enough gear (not get one shotted in higher diff). I would write more, but nobody reads wall of texts

When they revealed it was the same Kratos my enjoyment diminished immensely. It's not a reboot. Its a sequel. But that nigga is dead.

I actually liked the 2018 one well enough, but Ragnarok was incredibly underwhelming for me. The pacing of the story was truly awful, and the climactic end battle felt like it had no buildup despite playing for like 40 hours on top of a whole other game. Many of the worlds just felt like more of the same from 2018 with not enough to differentiate them or make it feel worth the while for a sequel. And to top it all off for me, the combat in Ragnarok somehow felt worse than 2018. Like, the camera being so close to Kratos at all times was already a huge annoyance, but it feels worse in Ragnarok because they add a ton of enemies that launch attacks outside the field of view that you have no way of avoiding (and Mimir calling out attacks is incredibly inaccurate and annoying 99% of the time).

I'm fan of the old games, but I was really on-par with the new direction the game decided to take -- if we're gonna have a shitload of Last of Us clones, I'm fine with one starring a character
I already like. But the gameplay is not that interesting imo, and it really failed me with its impression of Norse mythology. It feels a bit underwhelming to explore imo, but I really like shifting from realm to realm. The story pacing could also have been done better. Also there is never really an impression that Kratos was anywhere close to returning to his former savagery. And every conflict with Atreus seems to kinda resolve itself too easily. Also the puzzles... I will just mention them because goddamn, they suck. The side quests are unimpressive.
Overall 6/10, would be 7 or 8 but the ending is fucking underwhelming as hell.

On a sidenote, what was the deal with Odin just being 'The Bad Guy' with nothing else backing him up? Like, really? Everyone else is actually a good person deep down, except Odin? I feel that's kinda bullshit.
Either Odin also needed to be more humanized, or everyone needed to be more humanized into a flawed person, bad enough that it justified a ruthless person like Odin trying to establish his heavenly sky order or whatever.
It is *stupid* that we go from Greek Mythology where everyone is a bastard, to Norse Mythology where everyone is nice except Odin and his gay lieutenant.

the combat is extremely shallow, every major boss fight is 50% QTEs, you're not allowed to solve puzzles yourself because the mandatory follower npc will always give you the answer within 15 seconds, and the story is really fucking dull most of the time. I haven't played the original trilogy but I highly doubt context would have made me enjoy it more.

It's the opposite of simple. Baldur is defeated because a dwarf randomly gave Atreus magic arrows that happen to be made of his only weakness and then a random strap happens to break and Kratos happens to fix it with an arrow. Also the whole plot happens because Atreus' mom is a retard.

i dont hate em, they are pretty good.

gameplay wise, i think the originals are vastly superior. nice, tight combat.

as far as story, i hate with the new ones that they are presenting this whole "kratos has these toxic traits" thing but then any time he actually has to get something done, they LEAN on those toxic traits. like oh new bitchmader kratos is getting his ass whooped - TRIGGER ANGRY KRATOS THAT WE JUST SPENT ALL GAME SHAMING THE CHARACTER FOR.

its just kind clumsy. its not his calm collected attitude getting anything done, so the character development just feels super forced.

He makes a point again and again that Atreus should not let his rage consume him, but rather redirect his rage. Control it, not be controlled by it.
It's never really about toning it down.

I don't hate them I like them both quite a lot but my biggest complaint is the camera is too fucking close during combat. Just pull it back 10 feet and it would improve 1000% and actually be worthy of all the praise it gets

That being said the original trilogy is still far superior even if they fixed the camera how I want, which is why nugow gets shit on

they're a lightning rod for various trends people on /v/ seethe about. if you are simply looking for a middle of the road action adventure with an involved story element then nu god of war will probably seem fine, an inoffensive 8/10 on the ign scale.
