The cube form unironically makes the gamecube easier to move or store.
I genuinely don't get what problems people have with it. Do they really think the curvy almost phallic phaped bluray disc players are more convenient?

The standard one, the whole point of the gbplayer is to be able to play GBA games without wearing out a battery.
It being displayed on the TV is a secondary upgrade/sidegrade if you've modded your GBA.

The Gamecube came out at the peak of trying to make games seem cooler and more mature. The PS2 and XBox looked like high-end CD players with a futuristic aesthetic and jet-black color scheme in an attempt to seem more sophisticated. The Gamecube meanwhile looks like a Fisher-Price toy, and in the end that's part of what got it stuck with the kiddie console stigma (despite technically having stronger graphical specs than the PS2).
It was, legitimately, shallow "it looks like a toy" bullshit. That's all there is to it.

Nintendo was unironically thinking "they'll buy it because it's Nintendo" ignoring that every design philosophy Super Mario 64 and OoT codified for 3D gaming had stuck and that they couldn't just rest on their laurels. They also weren't expecting the rise of the first person shooter and GTA.

The handle isn't too great. It's in the way when it comes to storage and shit. But it is actually kind of nice when you're moving the console.
Should have been able to take it off or push it inside or something though. Something.
But the gamecube still has a more practical shape than the vast majority of systems.
