Combat log is one option, but floating damage can be convenient so long as it doesn't get spammy. Basically, functionality allowed by MSBT addon for WoW (heavily configurable, which means you could also use it to multiply eye cancer) is how you'd want it to work, consolidating e.g. area of effect damage or multiple targets suffering from damage over time effects to to "11k [11 hits]" or abilities with multiple damage effects to "10k [3 hits]", filtering irrelevant sources entirely (you'd do this manually in the addon, but in the absence of configurability, defaults should be sound), ability icons to make it clear which effect is doing how much damage, color-coding of damage types, having specific floating text areas configured so they're not quite at the most important part of the screen, etc.
