Unfortunately, the VESA HDR specification is a total fucking mess and cheap panel makers made sure it would be that way so they could sell their garbage with the HDR! icon on the box. Actual, good HDR is awesome and easily better than ray tracing or frame generation or whatever other graphics gimmick you can think of. It might even be better than VRR. Almost every display is problematic in a number of ways. It's still leaps and bounds better than the first Switch's screen or the original Steam Deck's (surely the rest of the handheld market -- Legion Go, ROG, whatever -- has better examples, but I wouldn't know).

Given the price of the Switch 2 the weaknesses are grating, of course, and even if firmware can improve this it still makes one wonder why they bothered with a 120Hz display when that's never going to be a target for developers anyway.
