Realistically, what can it do to live up to the first two games?

Doesn't have to. It just needs to come out and even could be a joke like DNF.

Do cool physics stuff and innovative gameplay based on it. HL Alyx was great in that regard, so if they make 3 I'm sure it'll be great.

Just tie up the story and give us as much full freedom for Source 2 so we can make gmod 2 and a lot of mods, half life alyx support is tied up to vr and valve refuses to release a propper working version of the cs 2 variant.
Thats literally all they have to do, oh don't worry about critics, there will be no doubt a bunch of contrarians around here calling it the worst game ever, its just in their nature to be giant faggots.

I don't know why Valve has been sitting on Source 2 for so long. Releasing the proper tools would start another golden age for PC gaming.

>More physics gameplay where you get gravity gun early on.
>Don't make story or characters be lame and gay.

open world wouldn't be the worst thing, i can imagine it really building on the idea that the world is doing its best to recover since the combine retreated

half life 2s buggy sections were great, i'd love to have that be a whole open world experience

imagine the rubble and remains of city 17 basically become "the zone" from stalker thanks to alien dimensional fuckery, and the main plot is recovering GlaDOS's stash of cryo-preserved humans for repopulation
but ideally that would be a spinoff, half life 3 should stick to the linear marathon route formula

source 2 despite its advancements is quite limited (esp for open worlds) compared to what s&box is seeming to be turning into

im not sucking garry newmans cock, guys pissed me off with how long hes gatekept the only source 2 dev tools, but no use crying over spilt milk

If the leaked dota code is anything to go by, hopefully massively improved AI. AI has been stagnant for the past decade and half.

HL1 and 2 feel very distinct from eachother. Half Life 3 would need to follow that tradition in terms of gameplay and design but, we all know its just not ever coming out. If it did its gonna be more hl2 slop like HL Aylex.

Why hasn't someone made an AI that uses machine learning in a shooter yet like Polyphony is doing it with Sophy in GT7.

HL3 has to coincide with the release of Valve's penultimate VR gaming hardware. Pavlov VR, BoneLabs/Works, (probably alyx too, but haven't played) all prove that the platform works when you have the hardware to run it (index and knuckles controllers). I'd say the index is almost there for HL3, but the FOV and image clarity of the lens just aren't there yet. Once Valve locks in next gen VR, HL3 will be the flagship game, followed by the other source games. Pancake peasants will be left with Source 2, while vr chads will enjoy source 3, designed from the ground up with AR/VR UI. screencap it

Adding to this: The alternative to the VR HL3 path would be a HL3 that incorporates local LLM/AI systems to manage ingame AI. This already exists in the modding community for Skyrim, but you need a fuckin 20+GB VRAM GPU to run it and you're still waiting 5-10 seconds on a response from the LLM. If GPU's got cheap enough to be able to consistently run powerful LLM's on local systems and be affordable, gaming will change significantly for sandbox/RTS style games.
