>Epic store
Bad storefront that never improved. Tons of money went towards securing timed exclusives but never to improving the damn storefront itself. And for all the talk of giving creators a bigger cut and that it could -potentially- mean cheaper prices for consumers, it never happened.
>Stadia
Playing anywhere and having beefy computers running a game remotely doesn't mean shit if you have to deal with annoying amounts of lag.
>VR
Expensive buy-in, and not enough games for most people to justify. And when people did mass buy-in for something like PSVR, barely anything came for it, which turned them off of VR going forward. Stuff like Meta Quest, where it's cheaper, works on its own, and is compatible with PC, is a step in the right direction.

>They hate CHANGE
Yes, hate change for the worse. None of those fucking things are new, and none of them are good.
Shit like the Satellaview and OnLive tried it decades ago, and people didn't like the needlessly expensive, terrible idea then. There is NO overcoming the technical hurdles of latency, cost, and a shitty picture being streamed to you. Not now, not a century from now. It doesn't matter if you're next door to the fucking remote game server on a yottabit connection, it's going to suck.

Epic is a dogshit digital storefront. Nothing more to say about the Fortnite launcher that is desperately trying to be a popular store without doing any work to make itself an appealing store.

VR has been tried for decades but it always run into the same issue of people not wanting a fucking screen on their face. Doesn't matter how good and cheap it becomes; the headset is a dealbreaker for 99% of people. Also doesn't help that there are zero good VR games, none go beyond being a glorified tech demo in a shooting range, and the normal games that got a VR mode are hilariously broken and unlikable.
The worst part of it is VR has a golden ticket literally IN YOUR HANDS, but the precise modern motion controllers we have today are shackled to the fucking stupid headset.

>They hate the Epic Store
Because it's just like any rival to Steam that pops up. Has the same games on Steam, but the launcher has less features and no reason to jump over. When you've built yourself into an ecosystem you need a lot more than 'change' and exclusives to jump ship.
>They hate Stadia
Cloud gaming has worked for other companies (Amazon, Sony, NVIDIA) but it's small. Stadia was just not good or ready for launch at all, and expecting people from across the world with shitty internet to stream a whole game is insane even now.
>They hate VR
I don't think VR is hated for the tech. I think if people played around with it they'd enjoy it, but the issue is the software. It's just all gallery shooters or puzzle games. Very few games are built from the ground up to be fun in VR and the ones that do are the ones you always hear talked about. Most of VR's users are literally just doing VRChat or playing a shooting range simulator.

I don't hate VR it's just not good enough to be worth the hardware or space investment yet
It's getting pretty close though. Once something like the bigscreen beyond is reasonably cheap and wireless I think it'll develop as a solid niche market. It's not going to outright replace monitors obviously but my controller and fightstick didn't replace my keyboard and mouse either.

People want high quality products and reject low quality products, that's the start and end of it. It's why people reject generative AI as well (inevitably we'll get some high quality products out of it though).

Epic Store needs to be better than Steam, Stadia (cloud gaming in general) can't work because of input lag which is hard limited by the speed of light, and VR is too inconvenient and vomit inducing.

Microsoft has kind of got streaming right with Game Pass. It's kind of funny that it's pivoting to being able to play the games you've bought outright, but the sub model for Game Pass does work. The only downside is that not all the games support streaming. If you have a Kishi or a Backbone, it's perfectly usable on a phone.
It's actually pretty decent, but I doubt it'll ever be mainstream.

How does VR motion sickness correlate to car/air/sea sickness? Like I don't ever recall being sick or dizzy on a car/plane/sea ride, only having a minor migraine when trying to take vids on rough waters one time so I wonder if I'd get shafted by it if I ever tried VR.

VR was always gonna be gated by the price, the limits of the hardware, and straight up physical limits.
A lot of people physically cannot deal with VR well and get motion sick.
Nearly everyone feels something when falling, but some people can't even handle too much motion on a big screen without feeling it in the theatre.
Those people will never be able to experience VR properly.

Nah, the issue with VR is that if you're older than 14 it'll be completely alien to you and hard to adjust to without spending hours in it, and in the back of your head you'll be thinking
>Screens this close to my eyes won't give me cancer right?
>God, I keep hitting my fucking wall
>This body inventory sucks because I keep rubbing my mantits
Stuff like that. With kids, most of them play VR Chat or Among Us and adapt to it quickly and we'll probably see a VR renaissance when those kids either go into game development or get jobs and hold a niche for VR gaming.

But the real revolution will be hooking shit up to your nerves and just having your body shut down IRL and you get to fully immerse your senses in a game world, SAO style, which is definitely 50 or so years off. The reason why though is because that will be a general usage type thing rather than SOLELY for games, in an ideal world it'd be something like:
>alternative for medically assisted suicide
>that whole shit about serving 5000 years of prison sentences in two minutes
>e-dating a girl across the planet with the custom vibrating buttplug attachment
>the whole matrix / RPO shit people know is bad, but also really want
I think that will be the next, and last, great evolution. Far, far, far in the future.

VR failed because the most successful version of it is on limited as hell specs and every game is filled with pre-teens so it's ugly AND annoying.

The concept is sound, however, the only platform that took it seriously, pushed it hard, dropped serious cash in it, and released nice looking titles lost their fucking shirts (Sony). So it's dead tech like 3D is dead tech. It exists and is cheap as fuck to make a game for with limited graphics but there is zero demand.

Sure as fuck didn't help that the platform was flooded with waggle titles and wave shooters.

Give me that mediocre experience, give me that social justice bullshit some journalist read and decided to advocate for because it goes lots of likes on twitter.

I donโ€™t see it changing until todayโ€™s high end processors are much more affordable. Probably a separate unit that streams to the headset, 4090 tier, sub $1000. Then someone needs to dump billions into improving the screens, ergonomics, controls, and commissioning some strong launch titles. Someone who isnโ€™t Zuckerberg, at least.

VR is extremely capable just underutalized and too fucking fragmented. Companies really need to stop making shovelware games that are first person exclusively. I own a PSVR and a Quest 3s. I enjoy it and many of the games I've played, but it's really not for everyone. Some have weak genetics and get motion sick very easily, while others don't have any reason to jump into a purchase of hundreds of dollars. There needs to be more ways for people to try it before they'll be willing to buy it, and a real system seller. Meta trying to push their hokey ass metaverse (Or as many would call it, Temu VR chat with mobile tier games) and Google giving out those cardboard goggles for phones has done real reputational damage to the idea. I don't think it'll really take off till it has a real desired utility bundled with it to get normies on board (Like the PS2's dvd player or the Wii's wii sports).

Also we have 30+ years of making control schemes for KB+M and controller and games still come out with dogshit UIs and controls. You can see from the Wii/Kinect/Move era where everyone was throwing shit at the wall when it comes to waggle controls and motion design and it turns out that 99% of those ideas sucked, and lo and behold most VR games also have shitty ideas there.

Some short fast paced challenging arcade stuff, some cinematic stuff on the PS2 like Silent Hill and Metal Gear solid.

Finished games, that you own. Like movies right. I don't know if games are art, but I certainly treated them as such. I had movies, I had games.

Pressing buttons, right. Pressing buttons and the game responding. That is the act of "gaming" to me.

Consider: What if games were something else?

Well, I wouldn't like it.

>They hate Epic store
because Steam has been around and on top for so long that people are in too deep in to consider using another platform. Sunk cost fallacy. The only way they would would be if either Steam goes to shit overnight, or if another objectively better alternative comes around. Epic is not that. Epic is a much worse Steam. They were and still are lacking so many features that people just don't fucking bother.
>They hate Stadia
Streaming games is always going to be a contentious topic. The added input lag, the always online requirements, and being at the mercy of how good/shit your internet connection is is always going to put people off
>They hate VR
Do they?
I have a VR setup
I think it's alright
The problem is the barrier of entry is too high for what it is. People don't want to shell out money for a VR setup. Most people don't think it's worth it. And to be fair yeah, VR is cool for a while, but the novelty does wear off fast, and you're just left playing a janky game. To this day, the only actual game for VR is probably HL Alyx

I feel like this guy is a fucking retard
I feel like he's insinuating that the reason these alternatives failed is that people just rejected them out of principle because they HATE change. This is just trying to sweep the very real issues all of these alternatives have under the rug

This is a staggering level of idiocy. It was because people could be forward thinking and tech savvy (though admittedly the latter is a smaller cadre of gamers given the industry has grown a fuckton with social media addicts and those who grew up a after gaming required being technically adept, especially on PC.) that they point out the moronic platforms listed here and other problems.

>Epic Store
The proprietary platform that didn't even launch with 1/100th of Steam's features, lied about keeping games cheaper, let Timmy go into histrionics about the store's cut on Steam that was the same on most other digital stores while other platforms, console, and retail all had larger ones, among myriad other types of hissy fits that nobody wants their bullshit. Even without going into Epic's other projects' issues like Easy AntiCheat and UE, the Store had a lot of issues but worst of all was BRINGING CONTRACT PLATFORM EXCLUSIVES TO PC WHERE THEY WERE ALMOST ABSENT! For all their whining about Steam being a meanie and a monopoly, they were the ones who brought the idea of throwing money at a dev to keep a game locked to their shitfuck platform or months or years and they earned by unending hate for it. Seems even the consoomer types did too as the vast majority of Epic exclusives failed and devs often broke the contract for future games because it didn't pay off and isolated their potential buyers; they would have made more selling on Steam and elsewhere from day 1; even megacorps like Ubi realized the flaw and that's saying something. Rot in hell you greedy fuckstain.

>Stadia
Oh wow, a cloud based gaming service where you had to subscribe or use an anemic free mode, PLUS acted as a separate platform instead of using your own games? YOu would buy games that existed only on some VM owned by the cloud? For no cheaper, this DRM on steroids? Yeah fuck off. Cloud gaming is fine, IF you have control of client and server and ideally FOSS.

They should have known VR is still for developers and tinkerers, aside from a few cool games there's really no reason for a normal gamer to use it.

That benefited me as I have a company backed device that I can develop for and it's one of my favorite things ever, but it's like 10 times more difficult than developing a normal game and runs into many more problems which make it very tedious and takes me months to even feel like looking at the project to see what went wrong.

I don't get how people can use VR goggles even weekly. There isn't even any killer app for them. I tried them once in a museum and it was awkward as fuck.

Him ragging on people for not being interested in Stadia is silly because most people already interested in more intensive games already have their options setup. If you want to play more in-depth games, you'd already have a PC or console. If you're more casual, usually the games you're interested in are lighter games that a phone or a mid range laptop can probably run. Or if you're looking to kill time on the go, you had the Switch (when Stadia was active)
The type of person that Stadia would be good for is someone who has access to high speed internet (or is willing to deal with a laggy experience), is interested in more intensive games, but doesn't own mainstream consoles or a PC, and doesn't want to play on the Switch. While I'm sure they exist, that's a pretty limited market.
Also Stadia had it's own library, you couldn't play your Steam games on it anyway, so you basically had to commit to it. At least fucking Geforce NOW let you play games you own on Steam/EGS or whatever.

It's a bad store with no features

Latency issues out the ass not to mention Alphabet has a history of killing services it releases which they did with Stadia

The obsession with first person games in VR is fucking retarded. If you've ever played gloomy eyes, there is a massive opportunity to make amazing 3rd person platformers where playing the game is like manipulating a living diorama.

I like VR and played it a lot for a couple months after getting a quest 2, but then I reverted back to playing normal games on my TV. I think this happens to lots of people.

>Epic Store
Shit storefront with no QoL that tried to start a fucking platform exclusivity war on PC when one thing shared by PC gamers is disdain for console exclusivity wars. No shit gamers hated it and why its only real value rn is free shit.
>Stadia
Neat idea, borderline unusable in practice. Gamers are customers, not investors, why is it their responsibility to toss money in a burning pit?
>VR
Gamers don't hate VR as a whole, but it's expensive as shit, impractical in the vast majority of living spaces, and is most VR stuff is still just tech demos. Most people don't wanna drop 400 just for VR Chat and Beam Saber.

how about make a good fucking game?
Half Life Alyx? Give me a fucking break, you can't even melee or interact with enemies beyond bang shooty. You can block a headcrab with a chair but that's really it.
Blade and Sorcery? I'm convinced the people who enjoy this are 300+lbs, the AI can't fight for shit.
Battle Talent? See above
Breachers? Fuck huge hitboxes and poor crouching/leaning mechanics as well as the game being 98% kids
Skyrim? LOL waggle waggle waggle
Boneworks? See Blade and Sorcery, but it's even worse.
Then you have ports that are essentially playing on a Wii with a curved 3d screen

Stadia was just a lot of bad ideas combined together which was disappointing because Google if anyone could have taken the time to do it right and it probably would thrive if they instead released some sort of open source protocol and modular platform for game streaming, and then sold subscriptions for access to their servers. Unfortunately, they did nearly everything the wrong way. GeForce Now had problems but as you said, you could use you existing games.

Cloud gaming is a decent idea if handled right but there are SO many potential fuckups that can leave it something that means megacorps (game publishers, platform owners/stores, infrastructure and hosting etc) get all the benefit where users are again shunted into something that's restrictive. Goodbye modding - its not YOUR system after all. Goodbye piracy, oh no we can't have that running on our cloud etc. etc. So its important for it to be done right. For a long time the vidya justification for it was held back by networking tech - that those who had high speed Internet capable of really making use of streaming games this way usually had ways to play on their own hardware etc. Since we've come into cheap (often mobile) platforms and the like, therewas the concern for awhile about a big push to move to this - in fact Denuvo was advertising basically a VM where the user connected to the game being hosted by the publisher or some third party and thereby had no way to crack, mod etc. Its a good thing that hasn;'t taken of for a variety of reasons...yet.

SteamPlay / Together (though I'd like to see it decoupled from Steam and FOSS like Proton, as well as integrated) and stuff like Moonlight (and more important Sunshine; until itsarrival it was predicated on GeForce Experience for the server part, even if the client was FOSS) are a good way to go by comparison, vs the waste of time Stadia became

VR was okay for what it was but too expensive and too limited, Stadia was made by google an untrustworthy satanic conglomerate, Epic gamestore was made by Epic who make unreal and fortnite an untrustworthy satanic conglomerate.
playing snes in my pjs sound pretty nice actually.
