SNES

Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country were great, but I'm pretty happy with the Genesis.

SNES. This isn't even a debate to me.

The SNES is objectively the correct choice here but I'm such a Sonicfag I still pick Genesis

Snes still makes my heart jump with adrenaline and make me feel 9 years old again whenever I see it, the controller, the logo, or the colors. I love this console so fucking much, whenever I think of video games this is the one in my minds eye.

Genesis. Like others have already said, on paper SNES beats the Genesis, but the Genesis was dripping with soul. This was the case for every single console they made before they exited. You have no clue what I'd give for one more actual SEGA console. I want it bad enough that I'd actually consider buying a console again just for a legitimate SEGA console .

I find going back to Genesis games more fun. The ones I like at least. SNES is overall the better console but their games do not feel as easily pick up and play as the Genesis games. Also I enjoy the Genesis sound chip more than the SNES one. So when a game does sounds and music well on Genesis it is exceptionally good in comparison. This was a very overlooked feature by even Sega themselves at the time since they cheaped out like fucks with the later models.

Genesis games also tend to run better. SNES games can have a lot of slowdown. I would say that back then developers didn't even truly maximize what they could do with the Genesis. Lastly, Sonic 3&K was the best platformer of that era and probably the best 2D one of all time.

Genesis sound chip was better depending on the game. for example, Can't Wait to be King sounds better in Genesis Lion King because it has more oomph to it. the SNES version is too soft. the Sonic games are another example of what happens when that sound chip is put to work by people who know what they're doing.

The music from the great SNES games is plainly more memorable and technologically better as well as having higher possible complexity and the ability to actually resolve different sounding instruments.

Some amazing games on this list but I would expect as much anyways from this console. I like your idea of a top 50 for each but usually I never think much on this. For me its usually a top 10 or 20 at most. Beyond that not sure if ranking even matters much. i was saying that the genesis sound chip was pretty magical when given to the right people. Sparkster's OST on Genesis was pretty stellar for example. no shade to Sparkster SNES, since that was also a pretty bangin OST. again I'll bring up Sonic as well, all 3 genesis games had perfect OSTs that are still remembered to this day. Moonwalker took MJ songs and gave them a unique flavor. Castlevania Bloodlines worked alot of magic with the sound chip. it's just all down to how its used and what the composer wants. of course the SNES was better if you're going for more orchestral, melodic stuff. ain't denying that. but you gotta recognize that both were good. just good at different things.

I've talked about video games online for 30 years and at this point I accept that the world is full of people who cannot tell the differences between things and cannot tell the similarities between things. You are one of them.

Objectively speaking (this could be measured by doing some kind of average dissimilarity test) the SNES is an order of magnitude better at producing varied instrument sounds. The Genesis produced worse-sounding music than the NES in terms of actual enjoyability.

Was the 16-bit era the only time we had 3 consoles that were all great and actually distinct from each other? You could lose yourself in the library of any one of the SFC/SNES, MD/Genesis, and PCE/TG16 and never want for good games.

SNES just has way more games especially counting the Super Famicom library. Mega Drive just wasn't too popular in Japan, and SFC ended up getting all the 3rd party support
However both consoles are great and consolitate the holy trinity of vidya along with the NES/Famicom

I had both at the same time when I was a kid.

Personally, when the game had a multiplat versions, I generally preferred Genesis. Still, Super NES had more games that pleased me, like Zelda LttP, Mario Kart and others.

Still, my favorite console of all time is still Dreamcast.

Genesis also had its share of amazing games. Castlevania Bloodlines, Vectorman, Rocket Knight Asventures, Gunstar Heroes, Contea Hard Corps, Shining Force, etc. i think which console you preferred really just comes down to what types of games youre looking for. if you want RPGs and cutting edge graphics, yeah. SNES. if you want faithful arcade ports, fantastic sports titles, and some unique flavors of platformer, you go for genesis.

i lean towards genesis, since it has more of what i want.

Dude the TG?PC had tons of great stuff. Shmups alone it had the Star Soldiers quadrilogy, Super Darius 1&2, Gradius 2, and a bajillion others.
It also has Rondo of Blood which is a big deal, Legendary Axe, and a bunch of classic Bomberman's. Like I won't deny that it's the weakest of the three, but it was no slouch.

Many of the games you mentioned were not sold at toys r us and some not in America. If you lived outside of a big city you had toys r us to buy from. Ordering was not really an idea we started that a few years later but I'm sure some people did at the time

I think this anon is right. The reason why NG eclipsed it in popularity was due to the re-imagined reboots of each series. Shinobi for PS2 while great was ultimately a simplistic arcadey type of experience during an era where for better or worse this style of game was just finished by this point. Almost nobody cared anymore. Fighters were still liked but beyond that most just did not care. Then it had a forgettable sequel in Nightshade that didn't even have the name. So it only further confused and alienated people.

Meanwhile Ninja Gaiden got one of the greatest possible re-imaginings or reboots you could possibly ever think of. It may even be the GOAT at having successfully done this. The 2D games absolutely were phenomenal but most will be talking about the NES versions. Not the inferior demakes of these games that were on 16-bit consoles. So while Shinobi fizzled out of whatever popularity it had NG got an enormous revival thanks to the exceptionally amazing 3D action games. At least for a bit though. We can all thank Itagaki for this.

If you like fast paced arcade style games, then Genesis.
If you like slower paced JRPG style games, then SNES.

Blast processing wasn't a meme, the CPU is faster and can load more sprites with less slowdown. It even had a higher resolution so the pixels could be bigger and more interesting as well. That's why there are no comparable arcade action games for SNES. The only one I can think of is Space Megaforce, which is a Compile game, and if you know who they are then you probably already own a Genesis and know what the hell I'm talking about.
SNES had the best RPGs of the generation. Sure PSIV is a classic, but when you have DQV, CT and FFVI to contend with, there is just a clear winner in that regard and it's the SNES.

It's not a game, it's the BIOS for the Satellaview. Players would walk around a town and read about upcoming downloads and stuff. It also has some good tracks.

The only reason people prefer SNES is because of the Nintendo games and RPGs/Action Adventures.
Sega is better for arcade games because they were an actual arcade developer.

SNES had some good arcade style games too.

It had something for everyone too, but yea, Sega was still a bit better for arcade style games because Sega was an arcade developer themselves. People generally only prefer SNES because of Nintendo and Square.
