I think the people who say this one's the best are really just operating off of nostalgia.
Because if you think about it, the main gameplay conceit here is constantly mashing your fucking thumb on the dpad. Like what else is there, the karts aren't as satisfying to control as the bikes in Wii and the items are completely unexciting compared to Double Dash. The courses are good I guess but then again they have a lot of shitty SNES/GBA courses with few improvements.

Nope. I was not a 10yo toddler when DS came out. If anything, I should feel nostalgic towards the original SNES and N64 Mario Karts, latter which I prefer.

MK DS is still an excellent, arguably the best MK. It actually still focuses on KART RACING CARS, does not go overboard with the cartoony designs, and does not give every single character its own vehicle type.

>mashing
There's a specific rhythm to it.

It actually does do that
I'm pretty sure it's like the only game in the series to have character-specific karts

I regularly swwitch between saying DS or Wii are the best. DD has the most SOUL imo yet I like playing DS and Wii slightly more. There is something fun about snaking in DS.

Once you beat the game every character can use every cart with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions

If Wii only had eight racers, it'd be the best. The game is simply too chaotic with 12 racers.

Online play was cool

I really liked the bottom screen in DS, it made checking for incoming items so much easier without having to look backwards all the time

So when is World getting good?
I'm waiting for nintendo to balance their shit

realistically speaking. because the nintendo ds lite was my first console ever, mario kart ds is probably the only one i ever played and i barely remember it because i only played it at a party with that shareplay feature thing. since i didnt actually have the game

8 players would definetly help with the item chaos for sure. The blue shells in Wii are one of the biggest complaints I see (and agree with). The extra 4 racers don't add anything to the race except allow more opportunities for blue shells and lightning.

Okay, so you never played the Game Cube one, or any of the modern ones.

>DD has the most SOUL imo
nah, 64 wins this, easily
>explorable tracks just for the sake of it
>first jazz fusion soundtrack
>what a pity screen
>memorable battle courses
DD is mechanically better than 64 by a long shot, but has nowhere near the same amount of soul, outside of Rainbow Road, the soundtrack is too cartoony, almost like something made for pre-schoolers

Snaking bad. Overpowered inward drift bikes good

DD has the worst case of nostalgiafags. DS has an argument if you're a purist.
8 Deluxe is the best one. Wii is probably close 2nd.
Worst one is Super Circuit, and it's a shame because it probably has one of the best presentations of the franchise.

People say it's the best? Damn, I remember playing this as a kid and thinking it was pretty good for a handheld game but couldn't wait to play a "real" MK. Is it really the pinnacle of series? That's a bit disappointing to be honest.

Do people really call this one the best? I got so bored of it I just started using cheat codes online. MK 64 and DD are the best contenders for me

You have to understand that when you were in school and owned this game, 7 other random kids could download play and race for free. It made group trips so much more fun aswell. It was like couch co-op with strangers.

This and Mario Party DS really made download play shine.

For me, it's the Wii mod with like 500 added courses

You cannot be nostalgic about anything that came out after the Dreamcast.
