I have never really understood it, but I have replayed games multiple times with little self imposed challenges. The most mainstream one was a one-bro run of dark souls 1 that is actually pretty easy if you've played the game a few times, you just need a walkthrough.
Speedrunning though, I don't like the concept for myself. It's fun to see people fuck around in a game with glitches, but I don't play games like that

There is an achievement in mirrors edge for doing time trial stuff, one level in particular I had a hard time getting the record and got stuck for like 2 hours running it over and over, it was about 1 minute long too
