It's at the end of Maelle's relationship stuff. He could have intervened earlier and saved Gustave but he thought he might get in the way of his goals down the line so he let him die.

I actually saw it as the opposite, he is similar to Gustave intentionally to make you like him. He is basically doing the same thing to the player as what he is doing to Maelle

It's all a lie, from the second he appears everything Verso says and does is with the intent of manipulating everyone, and taking over Gustave's role as Maelle's guardian is a crucial part of his plan to manipulate her.

I get what you mean and how it represents the game, but the character maelle died once she gets to remember alicia. All the things that made maelle feel like maelle are gone when she reawakens, she says she prefers maelle, but look at how she talks, what she says, what she does, how she acts. the innocent and strong willed maelle is fucking dead and now all we get for the third act of the game is the Crispy Cyclops.
