Sakaguchi had his faults, but he also had a clear vision and a set of themes for the games in the series. Shinto-inspired animism, memento mori, man vs nature, it goes through all his works.

Ironically, the only mainline FF since then that managed to touch the same themes is 16.

merging with several companies and reselling their decades old games over and over is definitely a great way to make money, but clearly not a great way to run a company that wants to actually make anything new which is why the last 6 final fantasy games have either been total development clusterfucks that take 6-10 years to come out or mmo's and why some fucking frenchmen can make tons of money just by saying "hey, remember final fantasy 10? we made that with parrying"

That isn't even that exceptional, great leaders require great employees and vice versa, and both get worse when they are separated from each other.
As another example, John Lasseter made nothing but absolute kino at Pixar. After he was ousted from Pixar, Pixar's quality plummeted - but John Lasster also has not made a single good movie in his post-Pixar career. It was the perfect storm at both Pixar and Square that created their past glories.

That doesn't change Uematsu's comment (which is right). It took Square 20 years post Spirits Within to get mostly back on their feet. They had big pile of shit (literally... nearly everything that isn't FF12, FF12-2) to sift through for their kernels of gold (FF12, FF12-2).

Also the FF7 "remake" has been a dismal failure. Remember the first entry released on PS4 and we're on the PS5 now. The next entry at the rate Square is going will be on the PS6 and they STILL haven't finished the entire first... what was it... two? of three? CD-ROMs of the original.

>>713689474
Nomura is a decent artist (Parasite Eve, Final Fantasy 7-8) but he really should NOT be a game designer (Kingdom Hearts). It's clear he has no idea what he's doing outside of concept art.

Being fair though, it's not like Goochi has done anything notable post X-box 360 with Mistwalker anyway.

They got bought by Enix because they were on deaths door, retard.

Then Enix bought Eidos (also nearly on death's door) and mismanaged them (hence, selling them to Deep Silver who ironically enough also mismanaged them and sold most of their I.P.'s to others).

Not an argument against Uematsu, in otherwords.
