The 'team' barely even feels like a team. Like the second Joker leaves I can't imagine all of them still hanging out. Unlike the IT in P4.

85% undercooked life sim, 15% watered down SMT gameplay. this is all 50-130 hours btw.

other games would fucking die like concord if they had such a shit story to gameplay ratio. God forbid if you want to replay the game for the gameplay segments when you have to fast forward through twenty minutes of cutscenes every time that you can't just skip instantly.


the story touches on lots of real world problems, but doesn't actually do much with them. the game falls off in the narrative/story after the end of the first palace. there's lots of contrivances to maintain the persona 3 full moon boss fight system after the first palace.

the game tries to say that the party are all misfits, when in reality they are slightly ostracized gated community kids.
Ann is a teenage model, Ryuji is a track star, Yusuke is an prodigy artist, Makoto is a student council president, Futaba is a prodigy hacker/computer expert, Haru is an heiress to a fuck huge fast food chain, Akechi is a popular detective. The MC is an anomaly so he might as well not count. All of these guys have something going for them.

I think it's less about Joker and more about the reason they're even friends in the first place. Persona 3 was a lot more upfront that you were there to do something very specific and once it's over, it's over. Even then there's plenty of moments shared and bonding.
Persona 4 had far more moments where the team naturally bonded and did stuff outside of their "task" because it was a lot looser and had no authority/informant figure outside of maybe Teddy. It felt like they'd hang out regardless of the shadow world since very early on.
Persona 5 was an odd blend where you had the authority figure (Morgana) since the beginning and yet there's no overarching goal outside of his vagueposting about mementos unlike P3 and no one really hangs out enough on their own outside of their phantom thief work.

I know some people don't like Marie, but she was 1,000% implemented better in P4G than Sumire is in Royale.

I made it to the boat at about 100 hours (playing in japanese) and just fucking burned out and deleted my save
I did enjoy a lot of my time with it especially the music and some of the character banter but jfc its too damn long

mid shounen-tier writing, too damn long and full of filler, mediocre characters, piss easy combat, boring long dungeons with numbing puzzles or gimmicks, dating sim aspect is underbaked, social sim has zero depth or evolution from p3 and 4, personas become obsolete waaaaay too fast, royal add content all sucks ass and makes the game worse barring QoL, 99% of combat related stuff is useless, cringe dialogue, severe plot contrivances, and bland soundtrack with the except of like 4 tracks (seriously, have you guys heard any of the non-lyrical music???)

P3 had the bonds be more "contractual" from my perspective. Though I agree there was a lot of team bonding which I mentioned. It comes across in a different way to 4 but neither do it badly.

I guess my biggest complaint is the main group didn't feel like a group of friends, like I struggle to see them all hanging out after everything is said and done. Didn't have this issue with Persona 4 though, played Persona 5 first as well so it's not nostalgia fucking with my perception of P4.

Between 3-5, the party member characters are the worst and it's not even close.
No Sae romance.
(In Royal) you can't romance Yoshizawa until near the end of the last semester so you can't have a Christmas event with her.
The enemy layout and items you can pick up are identical in every Palace, and negotiation is lame, making the procedurally-generated hallways in 3 and 4 better on replays.

Well that bit is in both royal and the original, and I would argue it's not subverting expectations it's confirming your suspicion that your boss is the big bad (which the game heavily telegraphs all game long). NTA but I think the original ending where all your party members work together in the real world to get your sentence overturned and then you for the first time achieve freedom and drive off into the sunset with your friends is a perfect thematic ending. Royal, ruins the getting out of jail sequence by slapping you with the Maruki arc where Akechi takes the hit instead (you do get the sequence eventually but it's like 20 hours after it's relevant). Then the actual ending cinematic which was so on point is replaced with a shitty P4 rerun where your party members just see you off on a train (with gratuitous Akechi alive b8 for fujos thrown in).

I would also add to the ending, Maruki is just all around a worse final boss compared to Yaldy, basically a glorified cutscene battle.
