yes after your party jobs to the snake at the swamp (which is only knee deep), cloud gets knockback'd to the swamp (which is now deep as sea), and sephiroth shows up from nowhere to save him and kills the snake.

The idea was to not ever be sure if sephiroth was really there or it was Cloud saving himself, after all the movement that killed Midgar zolom was a tornado-like skill like Finishing touch.
It was Cloud possesed by Sephiroth that did the job.
