I love Total Warhammer so maybe? The gameplay is really different tho, and so is the feel of it. Warhammer is raw hardcore fantasy. AoW4 is family friendly fantasy.
The best advice I can give you is that you should give AoW4 a try. Sadly you won't get a real feeling of the game in 2 hours (refund window), so its a risk you gotta take.

I've played both.

Prodigal is like if you had a Zelda game that didn't have a traditional overworld and all the dungeons were close to the main town. There's some minor life-sim elements too, like marriage. Make sure you go to the Casino and do the "small favor" quest so you can get the running shoes.

April Grove is very simple; you go out cut down trees, sell the logs, level up, rinse and repeat. Pretty easy to zone out while playing it. It's almost like an idle game, but you can't really automate it too much.

Both games require you go into a building to change your equipment and have some nice sprite work and music.
