It was the most effort gamefreak put and it sold the least
Can't blame them for phoning it in

It was the last one that had any challenge. Then X&Y/S&M came along and took a game made for older children and teenagers and turned it into a game for toddlers. The pixel art was also kino compared to 3D models.

I don't even dislike the game but calling it the most effort Game Freak's ever put in when it features 0 new Pokemon and reuses 95% of its world map is a bit of a laugh.

S&M had potential with a unique concept, but the execution wasn't as good.

Yes, it's funny in retrospect because Gen 5 received some petty complaints back in the time.

Now the new Pokemon games are released straight up broken and ugly.

scarlet and violet are great. overworld encounters are the second best thing to happen to the franchise, after the physical/special split. it lags in the overworld and that sucks. but it's better on the switch 2, and that's truly the only big downside.

It was in Gen 3 that they started taking things way for no reason (online, through mobile adapter GB, day/night cycle removed), but this was the last time they went back and added more post-game, in this case the PokΓ©mon World Tournament. although less to do there than in the Emerald Battle Frontier.

The only truly bad Pokemon games I have played were BDSP and Let's Go. Let's Go being so bad of course that it is the only regional dex on the Switch games I have not completed in HOME. All of the other ones I have found to have redeeming qualities or genuinely good games. Sword for example got a lot of shit for the dexcut (even when it wasn't even the game that started it) but I felt that it was inline and the perfect balance between QoL and training your Pokemon, especially against the feedback loop of the online play which was a major focus with the introduction of ranks. Plus there were varied Battle Competitions, Scarlet and Violet have had exactly one Battle Competition that was different than "regional dex" or current VGC rulesets. I actually really liked Sword and used PokeJobs so much that I have tons of Pokemon at level 100 in HOME (at least 400). Also I did a lot of Trainer Card exchanges with people in college and played a fair amount of Endless Dynamax Adventures to extend my record.
I think when people declare [game in series] is the best in Pokemon's history, it's ultimately extremely subjective based on a few bits of criteria that aren't there in the next games. Lots of people for example miss Battle Facilities, and I do too, but there's so much more to even Scarlet and Violet than just having another Battle Tower that I'm even playing that still.

I can forgive gen 6 because it was both their first entry in 3d and on a new console, I mean look at how godawful base DP are. Plus ORAS had a fair bit of soul in how they tried to make it its own thing(looking at you BDSP) even if it didn't quite hit the mark. But then gen 7 is where you realize they weren't going to get much better.

I loved that game as a child, I had hundreds of hours in it. I still remember how I had a Sneasel that would never fucking evolve, even though it had that one claw item. I should probably play Black 1 one of these days,
never did that for some reason. I don't think I enjoyed any other PokΓ©mon game like it, but that might just be my nostalgia talking

I think every Pokemon game is somewhat worth playing even up to now.
One thing I love about the series is that it always does something different even now.
From the slimy urban underground of Kanto to the chilled out countryside of Johto, Hoenn's fantastical adventure vibe and Sinnoh's more swampy and ragged locales.
None of the games really feel like rethreads despite the series often getting accused of regurgitating the same content over and over again.
Kalos was obviously a big showcase game for Pokemon so the region is very focused on aesthetics - glitz and glamour are what's valued most.
In Alola it's very focused on culture so you spend a LOT of time speaking to all the different inhabitants of the region.
And in Galar the whole thing is ostensibly about consumerism, with a heavy focus on image and marketing and PR with stuff like sponsors, trainer cards and just Pokemon and gym leader merch everywhere.
Obviously some of these are gonna resonate more with some players than others but I think it's commendable that Pokemon never really settled into a groove of what its games should feel like.

This cutoff point seems to keep getting pushed forward as the years go by. As for me, Emerald was the last pokemon game I was able to truly enjoy, and I really tried to get into later entries.

Pretty much yeah. I enjoyed both BW and BW2, tho the later a bit more. In retrospective, both stories were amazing and some of the best the franchise has ever told. The graphics were full of sovl if a little quirky.
Having played all gens 1 - 5 I judged them very harshly in my genwunner mentality. But then came XY and holy fuck... they were bad. They threw any semblance of maturity or story forwardness out the window. Didn't even finish them. And now all new gens seem full of low effort childish themes.
Thanks for reading my blog.

Sun and Moon felt somewhat fresh and had a lout of soul and attention to detail put into them. Too bad that it's a slog and way too slow to play through with way too much handholding and dialogue, long laggy animations and even the new Alola Pokemon are slow due to having slow speed stats.
