This is actually the most unhinged game update I've ever seen. It feels actively antagonistic. They know that everyone votes random because no-one gives a shit about the intermissions outside of knockout tour. They know the number 1 thing everyone keeps asking for is a trad mode with 3 lap races. And then they do the exact opposite and force the meme highways. Craziest thing is they have an entire game mode in which they're well utilised and actually fun but they still try to force them into regular online and grand prix where they're just a diluted, boring version of knockout. They're actually fucking crazy at this point.

SEGA were very clever with Sonic Racing Crossworlds. They actually did open network tests, and could fix the aspects people found shit -before- launch. And them supporting cross platform play and launching in September when people will be well over MKW ensures it will have a healthy start.

I have like 8000 VR and 60 hours and still don't know what intermissions are. I play Battle and Knockout. Races are over in like 2 minutes and you never catch up once you'te behind, so I don't know why anyone would play that to complain about them anyways. It's so boring to spend 2 minutes on a track after getting item fucked.If intermissions are the long stretches of track between knockouts than they serve a purpose in the long term to collect coins and strategocally hold items and use them at the best moment. It's not about hurr durr muh 1st place hold, it's about a threat to that to make the game more interesting than "make it half a lap ahead of everyone and then they all just compete for 2nd or 3rd."

Probably the whole map thing for picking courses was added relatively late in development and until then you either turned on intermissions and got a list of connected tracks or turned them off and got all the tracks. I kinda assume NDCube probably took some notes after making Superstars since that was made as throwback to traditional MP with returning boards and minigames so bringing character dice would fuck with the flow of the original boards. Jamboree was a step in the right direction as far as a brand new traditional MP, but the biggest issue with it were the slow animations on boards with very few means to speed things up. A 20 turn game in a regular MP might be an hour if you are efficient. A 20 turn game in Jamboree takes 2 hours. Like I like Jamboree, but that really kills the mood for some along with not a very great minigame batch.

There's a lot more shortcuts in 3laps. Yes straights have shortcuts and those are massive but you need a goldenshroom for them so it's kind of degenerate design, whereas the 3lap ones are do-able with no shroom or at least 1
Also a lot of items are more useful in 3 laps. Bananas stay on future laps, green shells have more to bounce off instead of disappearing into the sunset of open world

It's such an obviously bad idea that I still can't believe it ever made it into a finished Nintendo game. Imagine any other competitive multiplayer game where you have to play a side mission in between every game just to get to the next level. A lot of them need more design to them to get used to in the first place. Sure, some of the intermissions are good. But others are held back because they were clearly made to fit into the game’s world instead of being actually fun to race on. The game’s design decisions in general feel at odds with itself. They add more choices to the paths you can take on the tracks, then restrict your choices in how you want to race. They add all sorts of tricks and cuts to cater to a more hardcore crowd, but then make the item buttfuck parade even more chaotic with even more players and even more lopsided item selections for casuals on top of buffing the blue shell.

The best part of the intermissions is the traffic, mainly the special cars. Ramps, mushrooms, that one asshole that randomly shows up and tosses around bananas and bombs. That’s actually fun and is a good way of making players improvise. And the new stuff, while inconsistent, is sometimes better to go for because even one of the Crown City WRs would jump onto a car for a boost. But that’s not a typical experience you get. Why did people buy the game if they don't like the idea of the intermission tracks? I'm not even sure if before release that we knew it would be possible to play traditional 3-lap races online, they were pushing the intermission tracks as the main way that the game would be played.

Think about something like Elden Ring where you have to ride around until you find the fun and there is vast stretches of nothing. Mario Kart World truly is an open world game, you have to drive around on straight roads to finally find the fun for a single lap and then repeat that over and over again.

It's a great example of why open world games fucking suck, the fan base realized that and then found a way around it, and then Nintendo patched out the fun to add more open world tedium. MKW is legitimately everything wrong with modern gaming, or it will be once the paid DLC drops. Don't forget to pay to use your own internet to play it online!

I just got it in the bundle because I was interested how it'd mechanically play, and for what it's worth, the game drives as smooth as a baboon's ass, it's real good to play, but the way the online's handled just bites is all. If Nintendo provides some options going forth for traditional 3-lap racing and custom knockout tour setups, in which you can route the courses you want to play, it'll be great, for now, it's mediocre. I hate MK7 for the way it plays and its general soulless feel, and even I'm thinking it's better than World now, because World's been feeling openly hostile towards the playerbase with stuff like this patch.

I played online for around 4 hours last night. On average it seemed like we got a 3-lap track every 5-7 races. Everybody votes for it when it shows up but the weird thing is that it seemed to keep repeating the same ones. Like it gave Boo's Cinema and DK Pass as 3-lap suggestions each more than once which seems improbable if the new "far away" picks are truly random.

Random was working exactly as intended, whether or not Random resulted in a full race on one course or a drive to the course itself depended on how close the Random course was to the other ones offered, they made it so Randon is more likely to pick nearby courses resulting in a rally race. Their mistake was not making rallies engaging enough to not feel repetitive or skill-based enough to not strongly reward the strategy of just hanging back and hoarding Power Items until the last stretch of the race.
