ME2 was where it went wrong. The Collector plot was a waste of time and it left solving the Reaper problem entirely up to 3. Even with shitty writing 3 could've cobbled something together if they had anything to go off.

To be fair it wouldn't be a problem if Arrival DLC never existed. That alone forced 3 to deal with the reapers. 2's vanilla ending is fine to just continue being episodic shepard stops long standing reaper plot.

The entire point of the second part of a trilogy is to build on the first part to lead into the third. ME2 completely fails to do that. And by the time they were making 2 they knew they were going to make a 3 so there's no goddamn excuse.

And the correct option would have been to make Arrival the main plot of 3. Harbinger being closer to the milkyway as a back up to Sovereign to try and retake the citadel. Having the reapers show up en masse completely undercuts the climax of 1.

Aside from Legion and Mordin the new characters don't help the main plot. Reaper reproduction doesn't matter and dark matter got dropped (if it was ever really meant to matter). Cerberus was fumbled since the invasion's already begun by the time you fight them. Its relevance to ME3 is small.
I think it should've introduced the Crucible (or other such macguffin) and indoctrinated sleeper cells instead of the Collectors. I think it'd give ME3 better set up.

Tali mentions it. They're symbiotic with their home planet's flora. Colonising planets would make them sick but they'd adapt, but when they fled the quarians spent so long in sterile space that it ruined their immune system. It would take generations to adapt to a new environment that isn't their original one.
So the quarians are stupid for messing up their health and even more stupid because they keep thinking their generation will be the one to retake the homeworld.

To be fair, I think dialing back on Harbinger might have been the right move after ME2. It's a shame we never got any more reaper encounters on par with Sovereign's intro, but Harbinger never really escaped the meme status of his combat lines.
Even in the Arrival DLC I thought he sounded more like Dr. Claw than a cosmic horror threat.
