>>713749073What I have now are primarily games I was interested in trying or previously enjoyed, but I feel like preservation and availability is being slowly eroded so I want to start archiving more. I'd hate to learn about a neat game I want familiar with and not have access to it.
The network storage idea wasn't thought out especially thoroughly, but there were a couple of things I thought it might resolve. First, space efficiency. I expect that archiving would require several HDDs. Rather than getting a larger tower for my main PC (I was considering going SFF for my next build), I'd be able to fit a small NAS into my makeshift network closet. The option to slot in new drives as needed would be nice, especially if I'm getting redundant drives for a raid setup. Presumably that's be more power efficient to leave on, so it'd be an easy on demand means of accessing those files from whichever system I wanted to play on (main PC, Deck, etc.).
If external drive(s) are big enough these days, I could probably network share that through my router though. Like I said, I hadn't done any homework. This thread just reminded me of that. Those are much bigger and cost effective than the last time I checked.
