How is it horrible? Sure, they've got weird sausage fingers, reflective skin, and Carl has oddly protruding lips (kind of like in pic related). These are not things you'd fixate on 1. in motion or 2. through a CRT aperture or early LCD monitor like 99% of everyone who watched TV at the time. Everything else can be chalked up to cartoony stylization.
