Playing casual puzzle games on their phones during lunch break.

Anyone who plays PC-style videogames and interacts with the gaming community knows that this is bullshit. Even in "female-heavy" games like FFXIV and Genshin Impact, it's still like an 80/20 split. And those are the female-heavy games. For your average PC-style game, it's more like 95/5. That's still 1 in 20, so it's not like you never see them at all, but they're not even close to 50%. And for some games (usually those that are all about knights slicing each other up or wargaming), women in the playerbase are outright unicorns.

Another factor that's not brought up enough is that much more so than men, women are social consumers of media. The men show up because they're hobbyists looking for something new and then the women show up after the men make it popular so that they can talk about it. Maybe one big work once every year or two can get away with completely disregarding the male audience and still hit it big. Which is obviously not enough to sustain a healthy industry. That's another reason why not actively coveting the male audience is death.

I have two sisters and both my parents. My dad only plays word games and card games on his phone and ipad. My mother only plays match 3 type games and puzzles, again on her phone and ipad. She loved the original Plants vs Zombies and played through that game dozens of times, if not over a hundred. She was super pissed when EA ruined everything with PvZ2.

The older of my two younger sisters as far as I know, does not play video games at all. She might play some on her phone, but I've never seen her play a single game since she had kids. The younger of my two sisters is not married and plays a lot of games, but nothing super actiony unless it's also a rhythm game. She also obliterates me in Dr Mario and Tetris Attack.

Now that I think about it, my sister that has kids played the hell out of the Sims when we were younger. We all played Smash Bros, Mario Kart 64, and Mario Party and the like when we were kids and I had 4 controllers for the N64.
