2007 was bad due to the rise of lazy low effort multiplats trying to get around the fact that the growth of a single console was no longer enough to satisfy or sustain major publishers, which also lead to the total decline of standards for every gaming platform, since the multiplats would typically target the 360 (and also lead to the death of many studios, since the tactics that those major publishers employed were usually terrible for anyone working with them, see: Bethesda, EA, etc.).
2012 was basically a total collapse once publishers realized that no game sale or pricing paradigm based on single sales (including low effort DLC would ever be able to satisfy or sustain them.
