Yes. Nintendo denied everyone a way to play simple races at launch by forcing open world shit into Grand Prix mode. People found a way to actually have fun with the game by choosing random and guaranteeing a 3 lap race. Nintendo then changed it so that no matter what you do, you're playing open world connection races instead of racing on actual tracks.
It's the biggest cunt move in recent memory. I don't even want to play the game now.

Nintendo designed the open world of MKW in a less intrusive way than Forza Horizon or Burnout Paradise. There's no real reason to do freeroam outside of exploration and stickers. Because of that the main game can just be navigated by a menu (thank god) and it's basically a completely normal Mario Kart experience.

Forza does a good job of it. Even Diddy Kong Racing's take on it was pretty good. It can work depending on implementation and the type of game. I haven't played Burnout Paradise so I can't comment on that, but open world/open field/whatever you want to call it can work. It just may not work well for a game like Mario Kart.

Staying last place on purpose for like two thirds of the race hoarding powerful items and then using them in the final lap to catapult to first place fast.
The wide roads and the open world around it make it pretty easy to use shortcuts with mushrooms.
So all you need to do is stay last place for the majority of the race until you pull a golden shroom and then use it on the final stretch of the intermission segment to get first place instantly. It’s ridiculously easy.

Like, it's not THE WORST game ever made or anything, but, once the novelty of new game fades, it's pretty much just worse than MK8.
Fewer courses even without the booster pack, with less complexity. 24 players was a fun gimmick, but is a shitshow in practice, the item balance is completely fucked, the grinding and wallriding is completely wasted potential that doesn't shake anything up enough.
Even before intermission tracks became the new world order, it wasn't a great comparison. Now that you can't even play the courses anymore, it's a joke.
