Why are Mario games so overhyped?

I know the go-to cope response is "because it's fun" but I've beaten every mainline 2D and 3D Mario and none of them were THAT fun, I would've never dared to suggest any of them should go on a "best games of all time" list if I didn't already know the latest ones are always placed in journo top 10s

They're just not that good or memorable and I feel like they wouldn't get anywhere near the same amount of attention if not for the Mario brand, and the fact people don't talk about objectively superior platformers at all proves that

Opposite for me, I would say they're not that hyped at all. Zelda was always considered the Nintendo prestige franchise, while conversely I would say Mario games are in fact much better.

They are a massive brand at least initially due the reliance on a phenomena of learning physics.
It feels good to master the mario movements and predict where he will land.
Shit like pacland that come before, and most games after don't have this specific feature, and are not as well known.
Sonic team did understood that and expanded on mario and this is why they can publish 10 shit games in a row and sell 5-10 million each.

And it's the same fucking story with the 3D games.
Mario 64 has 3D physics and acrobatics that feel good to master, Mario turns into a fucking ninja if you're good at mario 64.

I only play romhacks (of 2D games) and Mario Maker because they are the only ways to really take advantage of the mechanics of Mario games.
Simpler games need a challenge to make sense. For me, 2D platform need to work like shoot 'em ups, i.e., be so difficult that you feel like it's impossible. That's because these games don't have much value as a casual experience, contrary to what people think.
Many people think Mario is the perfect casual game, but I've seen a lot of kids playing Mario, both 2D and 3D, and they don't engage with those games in the same way they engage with true sandboxes like Minecraft, Roblox, and pretty much every other game of that style. 2D and 3D Mario sells to kids because their parents know the Mario brand. Mario Odyssey, which was criticized by some players for being too meaningless with rewards for the simplest things, was Nintendo's response to this. They noticed that their 3D games had lost their ability to compete, so they tried to create small sandbox worlds for children (and even so, Mario Odyssey's appeal to children is very small when compared to Minecraft and Roblox).

tldr: Mario games are good, but only when there is a challenge. They are not good for casual gaming, Mario Wonder being the latest example of this, being a super bland, super monotonous game that simply did not stay in the collective imagination of players and consumers for more than a few weeks, and only sells because of the brand recognized by parents.

Mainline games are consistent 8-9/10s, if you're not irony poisoned from decades online arguments. You know for full retail price, you WILL get a fun game. Is it worth the Nintendo tax? Eh. But the quality is not in doubt. MAYBE the worst is a 7/10, probably that one on the 3DS. Spinoffs are have spottier record.
The biggest flaw with the series overall is that the games are short and not that replayable unless you're autistic. But if you play it once a decade, you'll forget everything and it'll feel fresh and fun again. It's like a series of amusement park rides.

I've played a few newer Mario games not too long ago and they feel like they're made for babies.

Games like Mario the Lost levels are far more engaging and fun. Similar to how as a child you loved checkers more than chess but then you matured and grew as a person and as an adult appreciate the sheer depth chess offers over checker's.

To put recent Nintendo games on your best games ever list as an adult means you never tried anything better and never grew up. They're good for what they are, simple easy to get into and out of happy colorful feel good games but saying they're the best games ever made is where I have the problem.
