What does the video game board think about Guild Wars 2?

I played it at release and loved it. Stopped when the first expansion came out.
I tried it again for 20 minutes or so when it got on Steam, but it felt sad playing it again.

Good if you like WvW. Alright if you want a time sink. PvE raiding is trash. Good class concepts on their release, but now it's homogenized shit because they're too stupid to balance things.

My favorite mmo, I go back and check it out once every few months or so when the itch comes. The latest map wasn't great, it desperately needed a proper final boss rather than just sort of ending on a wet fart, but the one before it was great with cool events.

Gaming just became extremely redundant. Guild Wars 1 came out in 2005-2008 and Guild Wars 2 came out in 2012 when people weren't even expecting a Guild Wars 2. That's barely a 7 year difference compare to now where it's a 13 year difference.

It hasn't been very good for a while. Latest expansions are trash. Pretty clear they've diverted their resources to a new game, supposedly GW3, and left the skeleton crew and jeets in charge to make the yearly mini expansions. Good news is that after End of Dragons it got significantly less woke and every time they fuck up they add some new lewd skin, just a few weeks after releasing their latest patch (possibly the worst thing they've ever released) they immediately followed up with a skimpy bikini so there's that.

There's a lot of bad things about it, for example, dungeons are gatekeeped by meta enforcers and end game consists of standing in public spaces pretending to be afk to show off ugly sparkle armour
Even so I stuck with the game, because I love how big the world feels, I like jumping puzzles and comfy places, and I REALLY love asura. I think I made like 10 asura characters. My favourite part of the game was probably the early asura story missions, where its just a bunch of dorks getting into trouble. The story is the main thing I played the game for, but the writing just got worse and worse. I first realised how bad things had gotten when my misfitting asura character was forced to stand watching a "tragic" scene where a bunch of diverse all-female characters mourned the loss of another, as if I even knew who the fuck any of them were.

The biggest most hurtful thing is what they did to Zojja, my favourite character. The voice actor quit before the first expansion, and so she was written out of the story by implying she was made braindead by the villain, which is just cruel and sad. I was waiting for years for Zojja to finally re-enter the story. When they announced a new expansion where Zojja was finally returning I was interested in the game again for the first time in years. But the writers imply that Zojja was left at home in Rata Sum, humiliated, bullied, and outcast by society because of her injury. That makes no sense. I love Zojja and it's not realistic that my character wouldn't have visited her or made sweet love to her in canon. But the writers are implying I neglected her. For what THEY did to her. Then, the writers say that she trades her memories to join a psychic cult. That's right, all the connection she had to you as a companion, ERASED. It makes me so angry and the only catharsis is drawing cute Zojja porn, but I suck at drawing so I can't even do that AARGH I HATE GUILD WARS 2

I know it's an MMORPG and you're supposed to play with others, but due to personal circumstances it was pretty much impossible to log on at a time where I could play with other guild members. Got kicked out of 2 guilds because I work while they played. I leveled up like 3 or 4 scrimblos and got to a point where I had to find a group to play, so I stopped playing. To this day it's the only MMORPG I can stomach playing. It has a lot of fun aspects. I think MMORPGs just aren't for me.

It was kino of the highest order, but had problems in its core gameplay that made it uninteresting to keep playing after 2 years.

But it did a lot masterfully, despite being too different of a game than guild wars 1 that it couldn't be said to be a sequel, it did some amazing things on its own and remains one of my best experiences having played it

There is a reason it's still up after all these years, despite the core problems, when most MMOs fail at their second year.

I've been playing MMOs since 2002 and I've played a lot of shitty ass free to play Korean junk and I've played Japanese games and a load of western MMOs.
Of all of them, GW2 is the one I like the least, it has absolutely nothing going for it, I detest it.
They removed the trinity and offered nothing in exchange, every battle may as well be a solo encounter but you have a mess of other players cluttering your screen for no reason. There are technically some dungeons but the game doesn't do anything to lead you to them and most players don't care about running them because they're worthless and the story isn't interesting anyway.
I've put hundreds of hours into this particular game trying to understand why people like it but I cannot, it's such an empty soulless husk of a game with no reason to exist, just a bunch of collectibles dotted around a massive pointless map. Like go play fucking Mario if you want to platform and collect stuff.
I'd call this the worst MMO I'd ever played but the more I think about it the more I struggle to call it an MMO.

The combat was clearly designed for PvP. It's fine in the open-world, but falls apart in instanced content: press all your buttons, swap weapon, press all your buttons, swap weapon...

Heart of Thorns is peak open-world casual-ish content to this day, it was never surpassed by any other MMO (or by Path of Fire, that's when I stopped playing so I can't comment on more recent expansions).

I hate how dogshit the inventory is. It's bad on purpose, so players buy inventory upgrades from the cash shop.

I would probably still play it from time to time on Steam Deck, if it supported controllers natively. If I'm sitting at my computer, I'd rather play something else.

I was a Guild Wars 1 babby but GW2 has eliminated most of the things great about GW1, like Guild versus Guild battles, all other PvP modes, the beautiful character design (there was only one race, the human race, so all effort flowed into these. Everyone of the 10 classes got their own unique armor designs! And there were WAY more of them. It absolutely is, although personally I find the combat only really starts to shine against either high level (as in difficulty, not literal level) NPC foes or against humans. For trash mobs in low level areas you will really miss that you have not much to do because your NPC companions probably will kill them by themselves and because GW1 is not an action combat type of game.

There's still a small PvP scene that plays on weekends, and I got my buddy recently to start a playthrough of it.

It's a good game, but it's barely an MMO. The game is entirely in the form of small-scale, fully instanced areas. The game is structured around three RPG campaigns that are supposed to train and guide you toward engaging in the various PvP modes. Combat is ultimately about team-building in the form of choosing from over 1000 skills for the sake of one unified purpose.

That's not what I'm talking about and I would hope you know that. Compare it to Worlo's gentle build up to Deadmines all the way from level 1 and leading you into that dungeon having it be the payoff to your early game experience where you need to put everything you've learned into practice.

The closest thing I can think of is the Druid class in WoW, you literally play as an animal.
A race with an entirely different, non-humanoid shape is a fuckton of additional work, unless they half-ass it. All humanoid-shaped class would more or less share the same armor, and then they would need to create new models for the insectoid race. That's why no one does it.
Not to mention it wouldn't make that much sense lore-wise: how is the cockroach-shaped race wearing pants? Or gloves? Or rings?

It's the only good mmo worth playing right now. If you enjoy PvP and WvW this game has to offer the best combat in an mmo. Pve is alright but I retired from doing that after getting all my CMs done.
As a new player you will probably get overwhelmed with how much content there is to do, but you can do it at your own phase and always find groups running old content too. There is no fomo chasing besides cosmetics.

HoT + PoF are the only good expansions, and also happen to be the cheapest and on sale rn iirc.
Then the LWS, specifically 4 for the skyscale and roller beetle. Skip LWS2, 3, and 5 unless you really like the game. These can also be bought with gold to gem conversions.
EoD if you want the third specializations and fishing.
