i think i actually hate them because it forces other characters to be more talkative in a way that results in worse writing and more pointless dialogue.
give me a character who cuts to the chase, interrupts, and speeds it along.

Not to disrespect my man Freeman, but he really can't compete with Kris as conversationalist.

i like em if they managed to show personality without talking, and i don't mean just stuff like background hints and the shit they have in their room but also facial expressions and body language
a lot of games don't show either because it's supposed to be le you but fuck that crap, if it was truly supposed to be me then id like to actually talk to the fuckers or do different things then just sulk around with a poker face and doing missions and saving the world just cuz

I think we can split the difference between a dedicated "I can do this" yap machine and a silent guy.

Dead Space Remake's voice rules I think are a great rule of thumb. You see it in games like INFRA: that protag stays silent 99% of the game but does reply when spoken to, and it's a good middle ground. I also like to think of the Strider reboot where Hiryu doesn't say anything until like 2 hours into the game and doesn't even waste breathe talking to the villain.

what's their definition of "a situation where it would be weird if he remained silent"?
