>Not even 1 million europeans care enough to sign this
This just pisses me off, regardless of winning or not. Bunch of defeatist faggots that can't even bother to spend a minute signing an online petition. No wonder the industry is the way it is if people just accept getting buttfucked

This is simply just not very well advertised. Ross didn't approach this very well.
Seems like the dramatubing approach right now might get it to the finish line, though. A bunch of big gaming e-celebs are getting in on it and it's definitely finally getting more European eyes on it.
>>713803546language aside i think most people just don't care that much. The average normie plays the next cod/fifa and don't think once about the staying power of the previous titles because why would they? the new old thing is already in stores.
Getting 1 million people divided across 30 different languages is not an easy task.

>>713805501>KEEP BRINGING UP HOW GREAT FRENCH WINE IS AROUND THEMThis hasn't been true for fifty years. There is a reason French vintners refuse to do blind testing at wine contests. Without the name "France" attached to their wines they lose to American wine every damn time.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judgment_of_Paris_(wine)
Also if I want a wine that is not made in America I am going to get an Italian Primitivo (the original Zinfandel before the Americans decided to give it their own name and pretend they invented the grape), a Portuguese Malbec (Argentinian Malbecs can beat them on the higher end of things but tend to get bogged down by cheap wine that makes up the majority of Argentinian production), or a Spanish Rioja (a blend of Tempranillo and Grenache to balance the mellow profile of the Tempranillo with the fruity and spicy Grenache).
I am probably going to crack a 2019 Pillastro Primitivo Puglia on Sunday since I plan on roasting a leg of lamb to eat over the next week.

what these people are proposing is insane. i wouldn't want to try starting a new game company under the laws they want.
companies have no obligation to support a product. the law should make unsupported products public domain (note, this does not necessarily include source code). that way, companies can protect their interests and not be legally bound to past endeavors they no longer want to pursue, and consumers can take apart what they have bought and analyze it to their hearts content to understand, document, and make modifications to _their_ hardware/software.
>>713813776This isn't going to stop devs from making games for normalfags.
>>713812898>Every single other industry such as enterprise software and the music industry would see this as a major threat to them in the futureI can't think of a single piece of non-gaming software that operates in a way which this campaign is fighting against. Software is an explicit rented service, not a one-time-purchase product with always-online DRM which can nuke your software at any time. The initiative has no issues with true services (like World of Warcraft).
>why can't movie streaming be in the same position since there's currently no law that states if you bought a movie on a service like iTunes that your access must be eternal, everlasting and offlineMost streaming services are actual services. You don't buy individual products there, you pay a monthly fee.
And, honestly, yes this should be codified in a law. If you buy a movie on a service, but the service shuts down, you should be given the option to download that movie for offline consumption. And there even were some legal battles regarding this exact scenario.
>>713812903Nobody is asking for code.

>>713814030>even simply re[l]easing the server binaries would be enoughyeah, that is INSANE. fuck that.
the problem with the law as it stands is that it is illegal to reverse engineer certain types of programming. companies should not be compelled to release source code or binaries. at the same time, they should not be able to pursue legal action against those that are reverse engineering their software/hardware after support is ended (or at all, really). that is the correct balance between private and consumer interests.

Not in the initiative, not a talking point, only said by PirateSoftware. Developers will not need to give out source code. They will need to create an end of life policy that keeps that game functional.
>THIS IS A PETITION. SLACKTIVISM!
This is a EU Citizens Initiative that, by law, once a million signatures are reached will have new law drafted in response to it. This is not a suggestion box or a beg. It is either you get nothing or you get a law.
>JUST READ THE EULA, IDIOT!
EULAs are purposefully used to hurt consumers and benefit the bottom line of a corporation. Only in the USA are they legally enforcable and this is because the American government worships Coca-Cola and Apple more than its citizens.
>MMOS WILL DIE
They will not. Game companies will create solutions that will keep them running (privately hosted servers, LAN connections, peer to peer, selling servers to another company, etc.)
>NEED DADDY GOVERNMENT TO HELP YOU? COMMIE.
Ad hominem. Corporations are unwilling to be consumer friendly because hurting consumers makes them money. Government regulation is the only way to prevent Jews from continuing this.
>JUST DON'T BUY IT!
If everyone on /v/ stopped buying games that were online or relied on servers, companies wouldn't stop doing it because normies outweigh us 10:1. Why would you want a normie deciding what is good for your games?
>JUST PLAY OLD GAMES!
Doesn't solve the problem. Eventually all new games, bad or good, will be screwed like this. Playing a game from 20 years ago doesn't solve the epidemic happening now or in the future.
>JUST LET THE INDUSTRY DIE
Normies prop it up. It will continue and not crash even with these current practices. Sorry to ruin your LARPer wet dream.
>DEVELOPERS DECIDE THIS

>>713814657There's literally nothing wrong with the wording of the initiative. It's meant to be a short description of the problem that the consumers are facing.
PS literally admitted he *wants* games and services to die and he doesn't value people's loss of access to games and services. So, he's representing the corporate opposition to the movement without providing any arguments of why it is acceptable for companies to effectively pull a kill switch to destroy customer's products.
And the whole reason why companies (and him himself) are against this is because killing a product is the most efficient way of forcing customers to buy your next product (studies show that most people are playing games that are 5-10 years old, on average, which costs companies money as these players are not buying the new stuff).
He's advocating for planned obsolescence in software, which is a completely unreasonable and insane take considering software is easily preservable.

>>713814914the server could include special programming to run the game that doesn't make much sense to include in a client (say, a matchmaking program). as a business, you should not be compelled to divulge your trade secrets, and since the trade secret here was never run directly by a user or their machine, there should be no legal expectation by the user to have access to this program. however, users should be free to implement their own functionality and use it to fill the gap. nothing should stop a user from making their own server with their own matchmaking program.

>>713815645EA is a massive umbrella corporation that consists of smaller teams making the games, you can criticize EA for their practices, but the developers are innocent in this
I've read a lot about the studios regarding the games I like
For example, Battleforge was developed by a german team "Phenomic", EA acquired the studio to make them RTS games, the games they made weren't predatory enough to squeeze millions out of players, so they shut Phenomic down, along with their games.
Phenomic still had their team so they made an indie game dev company "Envision Entertainment"
These are just your regular people who want to make games, curse EA all you want, the devs were swindled by the promise of major league development under EA, but it ended up being for naught. Well, not exactly. The games they made at least got revived by fans, are playably to this day and are better than ever under EA.
>>713815995It's not just a matter of putting everything in a zip file for safekeeping, the build environment matters a lot too
The recent releases of the C&C games source by EA highlights some of the difficulties of this where compiling some of them needs a specific patch level of an old version of Visual C++ alongside very specific versions of third party middleware like the DirectX SDK and some ancient proprietary Nvidia toolkits
So even if you have all the source files, that doesn't mean you can compile it. Even more so if you don't have proper documentation about the tools used.
