the main benefit to the 'eck I barely see people mention is having a dedicated device you always have a game open on. Being able to suspend most games and put it to sleep is a game changer for actually playing through my backlog. Makes the experience much smoother than on a normal PC. Your brain just goes to gaming mode and I'm not tempted to open a browser listen to a podcast or whatever like on PC.

People say the Steam Deck is showing its age, but I don't know, when I see comparisons to it, the Switch, and the Switch 2, it still looks impressive. The Switch 2 may have better resolution due to DLSS but the Steam Deck seems like it can hold its own until at least 2027. Switch 2 vs Steam Deck 2 will be no competition as the Deck 2 should be able to outperform the Switch 2.

The Steam Deck is too weak to function as a "portable gaming console", and too bulky to have as a portable emulation machine. I loved my Deck OLED (limited edition version, mind you) when I had it but I found myself reaching for my Odin 2 when I wanted to play emulated games or my Switch when I wanted to play more modern games. There's nothing appealing to me about trying to play Sekiro at low settings and 40 FPS on a gigantic, heavy "handheld" device.

Steam deck is slow as shit. Any release from the last 5 years that isnt indie wont run on it without major comprises. Say what you will bout the switch but at least (most) games for it were designed with it in mind. Plus backwards compatible so the onces made for switch that shouldnt of work better. Wouldn't have said it like you did, but this is the correct answer. The only reason to get a Switch 2 is if you really really like current day Nintendo's offerings for games. If you don't care much about them, there is no reason to get the Switch 2 over Steamdeck OLED. Or really any of the other handheld PCs.

Actually, I will say that if you don't want to emulate or if you have no other means at all to play their older games, you can pay $20 a year for NES, SNES, and OG Gameboy games. Not all of them obviously, but a good amount of the hits. Paying $50 a year gets you N64, Sega Genesis and Gamecube where Gamecube is Switch 2 exclusive. Only 4 games on that one right now and both N64 and Genesis are basically stagnant, but it's there.

Steam Deck 2 is supposed to at least be talked about within a year or two according to what Valve said back in 2024 so it's better to wait for that and make your decision on if you want a Steam Deck at that point since right now it's been long enough that it's better to wait for the refresh. If you want it for backlogs or emulation that's fine, but we're at a point where we're close enough to a new announcement it's better to be patient.

Switch 2 will have exclusives for the foreseeable future and when an OLED happens that's still at least two if not three years out. The question is if you have enough Switch 1 games that would benefit from the framerate benefits and/or have at least around three or four games you want on the new system.

I am personally waiting on the SD2 to come out and will be picking up a Switch 2 in a couple months or so since I'm in no rush for it yet. The Pokemon upgrades alone are enough to sell me on it but as a system currently it only has the better version of MP4, DK, and MKW. Even then MKW in my opinion looks worse as a whole compared to MK8D.

The 2D Metroids are all good because you explore a planet and collect shit. The thing is that you have high mobility and speed so getting around only takes a few minutes max, so it isn't tedious.

The 3D Metroids are fucking dogshit because they have the same size maps... but you share the same speed as John Halo. And instead of cleaning out repeated enemy encounters in less than 30 seconds, you have to spend at least a minute to shoot the bullet sponge enemies before slowly toddling on. Metroid Other M is an example of how a good 3D Metroid should be, but the retarded story and shit level design ruin it.

Deck. I bought a Switch 2 and had severe buyers remorse after a week with it. MKW sucks, the screen is horrible, the battery life is trash, it has no games, it's uncomfortable as fuck to play in handheld, etc. I dunno what to do with the thing, I can't believe how shit Nintendo has gotten.
