some consoles can emulate older ones, my ps3 and wii can emulate basically anything sony and nintendo up to 5th - 6th gen and it's just two consoles. also i don't really like emulating portables on a big screen.
the only useful thing i see PC emulation mandatory for is a switch unless you want to upscale games. consoles are so cheap nowadays and so easily hackable i probably still spent less than i would have buying parts for a desktop. BUT i would probably still end up do one if i don't find an older model switch, so i guess if you don't already have some consoles at home then sure go for PC emulation.
