Agreed E33 has a great story, soundtrack, character designs but the combat is ass how it's solely focused on parry and dodge it should have been a secondary thing not a primary thing. That and the dark souls bouts to rest flags is ass and having estus flask healing system is ass the are is cool like the legend of dragoon but the parry dodge system sucks it should have visual cues like vagrant story with its risk breaker chain combos if they did all that the game would be a 10/10 as of now I give it a 8.5/10 because it's combat just sucks

Feels like if you don't like the Dessendre's twist the story falls apart. Act 1 is absolute odyssey in a dreamland kino, but it begins immediately tumbling off a cliff afterwards into contrived family drama and tries to make everything you've done feel utterly pointless, which would be cool if the family crap was more interesting than the world it'd established up to that point was.

I'm a ridiculously jaded anon so take what I have to day with a grain of salt. I don't watch /tv/ and media writing in general usually repulses me. Nothing about E33's story really stood out for me, but it didn't annoy me which is more than I can say for most media I end up consuming. It understands pacing and the story takes a backseat to letting you play the game. It treats the characters as natives to their universe, they won't turn to the camera and explain in universe terminology to you because the game expects the audience to be intelligent enough to use context clues. That's a low bar, but a high bar in the gaming world.

The real heavy lifters are sound design, presentation, music, and the VAs. The VA performances are way more impressive than the story they are attached to. That's one of my big axes to grind with /tv/; so much of media is audio manipulation or visual representation. Writing is almost irrelevant in the true perception of why people enjoy media and yet it is discussed as if it were the pinnacle because people lack the cogitation and ability to express how the elements that act on the subconscious layer contributed to their perception.

Tldr it's best quality is that it isn't bad. Which is actually quite an accomplishment and rare feat in media in general. That base level competence paired with excellent ancillary presentation elements leads to sum of its parts that is miles above its competition.

Also Esquie is probably the best written mascot character I've encountered in fiction.

Yeah all the ending arguments focus hard on the humanity of the lumierians but within the narrative that's not even a factor. It's purely a choice between letting Maelle kill herself to live in VR world or letting Verso kill himself because he wants to die. The fact that everything in the painting lives or dies is an unimportant side effect the way it's presented.

Yeah I really liked how the characters talked to eachother like actual people. So many RPG character interactions are just the character lore dumping about their race/class/backstory, and then when they run out of lore their relationship is maxed out and they want to fuck you.

I liked how nearly every bit of dialogue shows the world they grew up in. Most titles just take modern people and slap them into a fantasy world. This actually takes the time to think "what would their philosophy be on the gommage, what would they think about having children, how would they feel if death became so certain and planned but a loved one dies from a brick falling on them" they took time to think about the world and put believable characters that live within that world.

There have been several attempts at mixing artificial worlds in a non-trivial way into a story. The last time it was done competently in vidya was Final Fantasy X, 24 years ago, and the manner of bringing it in Clair Obscur is still much better thanks to pacing it better and making you care about the creatures. It ties up with the creative theme which avoid the "escapism bad" which would have been the hack treatment that any other vidya would have taken.

The painted world is real, the people there aren’t npcs. Maelle as a conscious entity outdoes Alicia when her memories converge. She sees herself as Maelle, her personality is Maelles, she cares more about her life as Maelle.
It’s not about her “escaping” to a fake world with a fake personality. She has spent the last 16 years living as Maelle, and doesn’t really care for her prior life as Alicia.
If you all of a sudden had a realisation that you had a life “outside” of this one, would you care? What about your friends, your family, everything you care about? Would you kill them all just to go back to a life you barely remember?

It’s not like she wants her brother dead. But she clearly sees herself as a child of lumiere. It’s not like Aline who’s known from the start it was a painted world and wanted to go just to see Verso again.
Maelle as a person was born and raised in Lumiere, all her family and friends live there. She also now has this other family she just found out about.

This is the worst game I've fallen for the shilling for since Baldur's Gate 3. Boring story, cringe dialogue, glorified QTE combat, only positive I can really think of is the soundtrack.

I like how it combines a family drama with fairy tale elements and surrealism. It’s very PS1-era FF-esque, except it’s filtered through more late 19th-early 20th century European aesthetics.

Also, it absolutely DOES have anime tropes. Gustave’s sacrifice at the end of Act 1 for example, plays out in the most anime-esque fashion imaginable.
