To start off with, 'hell' is a general term used for two different definitions in the Bible: Sheol (Old Testament/Hebrew)/Hades (New Testament/Greek), which is where people go after death, and Gehenna, which is the final destination of those not saved. By using the same word for both, people end up conflating the two.

Now, there is a kernel of truth to Biblical post-death suffering: By the time of the New Testament, the Jews believed Sheol/Hades was different for good people and bad people (being a place of suffering), and Jesus acknowledges this in a parable in Luke 16:19, which speaks of suffering and flames. However, it also speaks of the good man being 'in Abraham's bosom', and the suffering bad man is said to see Abraham and the good man from where he is and is even able to carry a full conversation with Abraham himself. As such, also considering it is a parable presenting a fictional situation as all parables, it doesn't seem to be meant literally. This is the only passage which implies Sheol/Hades involves suffering, and it does not mention Gehenna.

Gehenna, on the other hand, is the final fate of sinners. Relevant to know here is that Gehenna is an actual, literal, real-life location, better known in English as the Valley of Ben Hinnom, which is a location where historically Isrealites sacrificed children by burning them to death (Jeremiah 7:31 among other references). Those children no doubt suffered in being sacrificed, but their suffering was soon over as their entire body was destroyed by the fire. I don't really understand this meme. In Western works, there's rarely a church, and if there is, either it's specifically a Christian story made to spread a Christian message, or that church is evil. This goes for both representations of actual Christianity as well as fictional religions. They always seem to be depicted as evil in non-Christian Western-made fiction.

Meanwhile, in Japanese fiction I often see the Christian church and other religious institutions and their adherents as organizations and people of virtue. Like, if a story needs to point a character is Christian, they'll show her (or rarely, him) doing charity work or similar. Churches often tends to double as orphanages in Japanese fiction as well, believers being the only ones caring for the helpless. Japanese fiction tends to be much more positive about the church than Western-made fiction in my experience.
