This may blow your mind, but when you sell someone something, you have to let them keep it. If you intentionally it so it was going to fail in the future, either owe them a refund or the means to keep access to the thing they bought from you.
>>713848605What are you on about? They already have jurisdiction. Laws are how companies have any power to begin with. So changing them to be more in favor of consumers doesn't give the government more power., it just changes who it's used against. And if in doubt, I'd rather put that power on the consumer's side. It's not like games can get more dead than dead. Only one way to go.

>>713849881i answer you, not the anon, because the anon is being a disingenuous retard trying to reframe the discussion in the context of poor devs being forced to go back and do more work while struggling to feed their 14 children
the reality is the greedy publisher tells the devs to purposefully cut off game functionality after X years (with 0<=X<=infinity), so they can sell the new game. The goal is to get games to be designed with EoL from the /start/, not go back and do more work for existing ones. To my understanding most euro law wouldn't apply to existing ones anyways (grandfathered in)
Taking this sort of logic and applying it to anything else leads to borderline lunacy. Why should car manufacturers sell cars that don't randomly break after 1 year? It's their design?! Why should blu-rays of movies continue to function after they've sat on your shelf for a few years? It's their design?! The point of consumer laws is that if you pay money for products, you can and do have protections for getting the rug pulled out from under you - except with video games, which is the point of this whole initiative

Stupid vague retarded shit won't work. They should be going hard on different shit like forcing all games to come with an offline mode or some shit.
>>713850730the petition is trying to address the soft implicit assumption that every game is a live service - even the single player ones. Most of these problems can be solved at the design stage of a new piece of software, since that's where the real meat and potatoes of server architecture is designed.
>>713850183>I gave him answers with real world equivalentsNo you didn't? You're clearly the food guy because that's the only post that gave anything close to a real response. Not that a food comparison, food being a source of sustenance, is even remotely comparable to software.
>Because the government told them toYou're being asked why they would do it in the event they WEREN'T being forced, anon. Of course if the government forces them then they would have no choice which would lead to a litney of other issues, security being the obvious one since it has the potential to not only affect other games any other software that uses those server tools.
Not to mention it wouldn't be limited to video games but all software.
>America has the FCC, IRS and countless other watchdogs to monitor these things.Yes but video games aren't exactly the same as general communication and money. Even if it was you'd be arguing for developer protection if you wanted regulation like the FCC and IRS. Lord knows that they don't care about the average Joe.
>because lawmakers make it clear that if something cannot be done in a reasonable manner, it cannot be enforced. Yeah, and this can't be done in a reasonable manner.
>>713851036I wasn't saying it doesn't happen, I was hoping you would cite a game that you cared about and still wanted to play. Was 5 years not long enough? Are there not other games to play?
>>713851056And every post claiming devs would have to waste too much time converting it have no ground considering Ubisoft announced Crew 2 would have an EoL plan, no doubt in part thanks to SKG.
>>713850256>>713850295Anon, they're talking about games that are out but not dead. Not games that are dead.
They would still be hit by such a change.
>>713850759Thing is, it's probably not legal and they know it. It just hasn't been put to the test. That's why the shills are out in force against SKG
>>713850490The issue is the slow creep of games that don't need to be GaaS becoming GaaS. The Crew was perfectly capable of continuing to function without Ubisoft's servers, but they chose to leave it bricked for people. The fact that a game like hitman requires an internet connection, despite being a single player game, is also why this problem exists. Many laws regarding software were made with the idea in mind of preventing customers from claiming they have a right to the source code, not so that companies can brick that software at any time by means people at the time didn't even think of because technology has advanced.
>>713850159Of course it has to do with DRM. Online-DRM is also a "live service" that can kill your game when it goes offline and would have to be removed af end of service to comply with SKG. It's not like they'd lose anything if they stop supporting/selling it either.
>>713850937that's for lawmakers to figure out in what will be a very lenghty process (we are talking several years here with all sides involved)
>>713851056to my recollection, the game that kicked Ross's whole frenzied campaign off (the crew) literally DID have offline mode coded in, as found by people looking through the code, which was later grayed-out/disabled.
>>713850848My apologize, SKG. Whatever you troonies want to call it. >>713851184again, you didn't actually read it
>>713851260That was funny and sad. It is shown the capability is there, just that companies can decide arbitrarily to not do it.
>>713850329We had our own petition last year, the government responded "take it to the provinces" and ross decided it wasn't worth it. Best you can do now is shill the campaign so euros sign their petition.
>>713851056i find it funny how we are talking about how it can be solved when it was already solved in the 90s
>>713850937They can't, EU's petition format forces them to be vague and shit because they're not lawmakers and so the entire point of the petition is to "start a conversation".
It looks aimless and lacking any concrete objective but that's totally ok because that's how it has to be. You can't make demands, that's bad.
>>713851159that is one of the biggest things giving me hope for this whole thing.
While I dream ross's petition will actually lead to robust EU law that propagates to the USA too, if the companies just get cold feet and decide to avoid the drama, coding in EoL on their own accord, then that's some victory already.
>>713848643BASED BASED BASED
>>713851387I get some of the arguments of these games using newer architectures that serve to benefit certain aspects of the game but have a downside of consumers not being able to get those tools, but that is a game design flaw that has to be corrected. If a server architecture is offering less to the consumer for no tangible benefit, it is a shit architecture.
>>713851262>"I don't care about this, I like paying to play games like Concord for two months.">>713851373Some of Ubisoft's own employees even support the petition because artists don't like seeing their work destroyed for no reason. A shocker, I know.

You don't want to run the servers anymore? Fine. Just release the code or docs so that I or someone else can run it and I can access the game you sold me. The paying customer deserves those rights. Its that simple.
Is your server based off some sort of proprietary software someone licensed to you? Well, then those times are changing, because it should never have been legal for you to involve your customer in that, effectively sub-licensing them the same software but then unlawfully denying them any rights in that fraudulent arrangement. Those companies will have to rework their licenses and terms and things will hace to change so that the end-user gets to have access to what they need to run their games.

And once the petition is signed that's it. The campaign ends next month. It doesn't drag on for months or years like the other thing.
>>713851753>100k signs in three daysSo we're going to make it by the skin of our teeth, right?
>>713845961Biggest issue is that most of the SKG content is on english. If we can target any important e-celeb that is not english speaker to endrose this, it would be a great benefit to the cause.
One that comes to mind is elrubiusomg. He is the equivaelent spanish pewdiepie.
>>713855221Your position is to do nothing at all, and to continue to let companies shut down games whenever they want.
>>713855360I never said otherwise. I said we need to spam a hashtag everywhere like we did GG. I don't use twitter but it's what we got to do
>>713855567You need to go back to your interracial board.
>>713854506Deulyst was apparently released as an open source project, so no one has to purchase it anymore. The Megaman example they used seems like a bit of a shit example, if the original online players in asia had to repurchase it (I haven't found anything that states if they did or didn't, only that the offline version was ported to other platforms and required a one-time purchase to access everything that was in the online version, minus features that required Capcom servers).

>>713844634 (OP)he didn't even make an effort to present himself, he literally looks like a basement dweller in all of his media and never did anything to legitimise himself. this shit he has been going on about sounds noble but at the end of the day all it comes down to is "they can't keep killing games! but its ok if they give us enough warning!". even if there was a big fucking label on each yearly cod game saying THIS WILL BE UNPLAYABLE IN 12 MONTHS people are still going to buy them, and the price is going to double since people will slow on the mtx. literally any game that matters is not impacted by this shit. if you've bought $4900 in fortnite skins you deserve to lose your money. this dude knows zero about current software licensing and for some reason thinks video games should fall into this category of their own. if he was complaining about adobe, ms word etc then yeah maybe but coming at this completely from the angle of video games in a vacuum is room temperature iq shit. also his grass roots movement and the failure of it proves that this demographic of gamer he is trying to represent doesn't exist.
>>713855535>Your position is to do nothing at allNTA but that's literally the best option. Imagine for a minute if the almost 600k people who signed that petition had done nothing instead of buying The Crew, despite the unique player count the game itself only sold around 1 million.
Had the game would have been considered an absolute failure only selling 400k.

>>713857532>cuckYou bought digital trash. You have no rights, and rightfully so retard. Every digital game you bough is an inch of a cut up kike dick going up your faggot ass.
>>713857590There is no monetary gain
>>713857561It's funny. This campaign managed to get roughly half a million signatures.
If you and your youtube overlords put half as much effort into convincing people to not buy games with drm you would have achieved your goal a long time ago.
>>713857764Okay faggot but you're not my mom I can buy what I want?? Even if I buy a pile of shit it doesn't mean a company should be able to take it away after I paid for it. It's my property, shit or diamonds or otherwise.
>>713857532>Protecting consumer's rights isn't a bad thing.people need to protect their own rights to start with. we can't regulate against stupidity. if anyone believes it is a good proposition to buy a game skin, or any other type of intangible mtx then they are consenting to having their money stolen. if people don't want to get fucked only buy drm free, or phyiscal. the problem is that people expect companies to solve the problems they are creating by consuming from said companies. people's poor consuming habits are not the problem of the state, or any body to regulate. the free market will let this get to a point where people will have enough and that will be that. intervening just kicks the can down the road to forcing something to happen now where the need for profit will just be recouped in other ways i.e higher base pricing. i don't think what he wants to achieve is bad, or unnecessary, its just that game profits keep growing and growing and in lieu of being able to continue to make those profits everyone will get fucked because of regulation. right now, the market is quite segregated in the sense there is a clear divide between your live service / aaa players, and your indie, emulation, older games enjoyers. changes in legislation as it pertains to software could fuck everyone over. right now the only issue ross actually has is that people are giving their money to the wrong people.
>>713857889It was never yours to begin with, faggot. That's why it's a digital download that is only accessible through a black box server that you connect to. You've only bought a temp loicense, and you deserve the inevitable outcome.

>>713857742>How would you know it's not laced with lead if the companies do not inform you about it?They do.
I don't know what point you're even trying to make here because games with drm advertise that they have drm.
The game that incited this, the crew, not only had it on the box but ubisoft themselves said it had DRM the day it launched.
>You are not clever enough to oppose this rationally. You're begging for government intervention purely because you lack the restrain to not buy things that you don't like or even research them before you buy them and you're saying other people aren't smart?

But for some reason, instead of just refusing to buy from a company that clearly doesn't respect you you instead created an option where they can still treat you like shit but you can act like you did something just for that faux peace of mind.

It does nothing. No one cares that much in the long run about a game fucking them over because they can simply move on to the next game fucking them over.
To actually go after the source of the problem and nip it in the bud is the best thing you can do in this situation because it forces the jews to take a stand instead of trusting the normalfags to suddenly decide overnight that drm truly is bad.

Two,
>EULA is the next step of the conversation. No, no it isn't. It's not relevant at all.
The idea of a license for media comes out of copyright. It's not just a random thing you think a company made up.
> EU law does not consider a "Digital license" that you buy for software a videogame any different from a physical product.Yes, yes it does. Media in general, books, cds, dvds, games etc are all treated differently to say, a hammer or a pencil you can pick up at a store because they are licensed to you.

>your stupidityThere is no stupidity, just facts.
>I'm not American Then why are you against this again?
>>713859282>no argumentAnd there it is. But one more thing before I go, piracy doesn't kill games, DRM does much more damage to sales than piracy ever could. And it certainly doesn't stop people from self-hosting when they're given the ability to.

No, they aren't considered services, but it's still just a license, you don't have creative control over it.
>They are covered and protected by the same laws and regulations as physical goodsNo, no they aren't.
In fact different goods have different laws and regulations. For example, plants require passports as part of a preventative measure against pests and disease but something like a graphics card wouldn't need something like that.
"Goods" isn't just one massive thing with a generic set of rules and regulations. It's all specific and copyright just so happens to be the one that covers video games and all entertainment media being the reason they're sold as licences.
>just facts. No, none of the pro SKG arguments are factual. They're vague statements made by the ignorant.
>Then why are you against this again? It's almost as if I have a vested interest in video games and don't want some shitheels in Northern and Eastern Europe to fucking ruin them because they can't help but get on their knees for a company and suck their cock instead of just not buying the fucking game they have a problem with.

We can start with the Directive (EU) 2019/771 https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32019L0771&qid=1751082424132 which explains and clarifies the rules and requirements in regards to contracts involving sales of goods. This regulation is meant to act as a complimentary for the directive Directive (EU) 2019/770 (Very convenient, since it happens to precede it) and they clearly outline how the EU recognize digital goods and services and outlines the consumer rights and protections guaranteed to its citizens.
Of particular interest are the stipulations 29 and 30 of the latter, which enforce a certain quality standard upon goods with digital elements. But so far there has been no such legislation for pure digital goods such as software and it would be rather trivial to expand 770 or 771 to inclide those stipulations for software as well, including end of life plans.
Now for the goods versus services. this is funny, because "selling videogames through online stores" has allowed the corporations to slither into a legal loophole, because the old regulations that consider videogames and software as goods, only considered them such when they were transferred on physical data carriers. Nevertheless the European Court of Justice has ruled, that software and videogames are still goods regardless of the mediums they are distributed on, the legislation drawn up in the year 1979 simply hasn't been updated to include it...because the digital storefronts did not exist back then and until recently such a distinction was not necessary.

And said dissident (Vladimir Bukovsky) has stolen documents that have been used by plenty of historians.
>>713863397>because the old regulations that consider videogames and software as goods,Anon, every region worldwide considers them goods.
They are still a licence.
The term "goods" and the term "licence" aren't mutually exclusive.
Being sold on a digital storefront does not change anything and it's wholly irrelevant for a campaign that was sparked by a game that was sold physically anyway.
Stop copy and pasting things you clearly don't understand.
>>713847126it has come to /vg/s attention that we have a retard on the loose. I believe that'd be you.

>>713863642Doesn't matter much. Today EU is the most stable counter to Russia.
I really hate it when old people trying to make laws don't understand how modern technology works and the challenges it presents by changing so rapidly. Anyway, here's why this thing should be easy to do because the games I played 20-30 years ago as a kid did it this way.
>>713863698You can't even spell "license" correctly, you should not be trying to talk to me, creep.
>Being sold on a digital storefront does not change anythingYou should try reading what you're told, but it's quite obvious you can't read. The sale being a "license" is a EULA spook, it is not so much not mutually exclusive as it is completely irrelevant to the conversation at hand because under the Council Directive 93/13/EEC, all EULA contracts are considered unfair, null and void.
>>713863978Or I was just not wrong in the first place. Nobody even knows that this is eceleb related or that would be the only thing people flood the thread with.

>>713864214Ah yes, despite a clear post history being displayed right here. It just so happens to be a recurring pattern that this faggot posts the same image with the same filename and the same text with the same intent to make it seem like the whole website is laughing at someone and then everyone clapped. https://arch.b4k.dev/_/search/text/word%20has%20spread/image/5DFH7DO_XFSIko3gJLyYkQ/
Man, this initiative is really poorly thought out. Every flaw critics point out is just being waved away with "the actual law people will figure that out." When the people who put it together seem to be passing the buck, it comes across as pandering to the crowd rather than a serious movement.
>>713864167Now only if Italy could wake the fuck up.
>>713847126>I've been following SKG for months before the guy who literally is behind the whole thing
>>713864305Sure thing Thor.
>>713864305Because that's not what initiatives are for, they are to bring an issue to the EU to discuss and act on the issue.
Also, I've tried my own fucking best to talk about my perspective on the issue with my experience working on server software and someone who is running multiple game servers for 20+ year old games and I either get shitposting back or someone twisting my words.
>>713864305Yes? Pandering to the crowd so that lawmakers will take notice and figure out the best way to solve it is much better than consumers saying "this bad make it good" without understanding the fine details. People who do know how to navigate this are much better suited for digging through the weeds and figuring out what can actually be done.
>>713864460You are engaging a bad faith actor.
>>713864478And we should be, showing others that they are indeed bad faith actors.
>>713864282You're dumber than your retarded post if you fail to see the huge leap in your logic there.
You're coping by making up a fucking conspiracy about a random avatarfag hunting you online with multiple devices and shit.
>>713864305You really want random activists online writing the exact language that becomes a law instead of letting lawmakers figure it out and decide what wording to use?
Also, if the wording does change (and it will, if a law happens), it is far, far, FAR more likely that the wording becomes LESS onerous and is watered down to appease corporations and publishers then it is that it will stay the same or become more onerous
>>713844634 (OP)>this pass>kike publishers:"ok">Region block the entire of EU

>>713864671>(you don't need source code for this)Even if you did, releasing source code would be a good thing
>>713864946Yeah nobody would do that. it would promote so many hacks and people stealing your IP.
>>713864946It would be, but it does create legal complications that are best avoided. Source code should be released when the game becomes abandonware and it should be a purely voluntary act.
we must kill video games so that it may be reborn like a phoenix from the ashes
only then we can get perfect games like Halo 2 again
>>713864993Hacks for a game that nobody is playing anymore?
