I don’t care if people think this game is boring I was counting the days to buy it and play it back in 2018 I fell in love with RDR1 and thought it had a really fun fighting execution system I wasn’t disappointed with RDR2 in almost any way I loved the creepy atmosphere of the bayou and Saint Denis I loved the stranger encounters the story and the characters the graphics the animation the nature the cities Even Guarma living in a tropical country I was really impressed to see how well Rockstar recreates a tropical environment Even the singing of the birds was like in my country. Being able to blow people head and limbs off with a shotgun was also pretty sick. God I wish I could delete my memory and start again. Im always going to be gratef for being able to experience RDR2 as a 16 old… during the great summer of 2018, just after my junior year in high school.

I played RDR2 for a few hours when it was on PS Plus and I remember being mostly bored and thinking that the mocap was visibly worse than that of Snoy movie-games. The open world was pretty but it was hard to find something interesting to do. I was also playing MH Rise at the same time so my main memory of RDR2 is stopping playing to go back to dodging Crimson Valsatrax attacks like a ninja.

RDR2's story, writing, and characters are better than pretty much any western I've ever watched and getting to be an active participant in that world immerses you so much more.

I just don't get why people are so deadset on one style of game, and hate everything else. I like games all genres, all eras, all styles. As long as it's good, I'll play it.

I haven't seen the show but the game stood out just because it was way more polished than similar movie-ganes. The mocap and animation were great, the cutscene direction was good enough to keep people engaged, the writing was fairly decent (albeit disjointed), the graphics were top notch for a PS3 game.

RDR2 jumps between walk-and-talk sections, gameplay that's completely scripted, and overtly long cutscenes with mediocre mocap and bland cinematography. I also personally don't care about the characters, but that's subjective. But the pacing is awful and there is no sense of momentum to the story. Finally the gameplay is just samey shootouts. It's just a slog to play and to watch.

That's been Rockstar's formula since GTA III. A large majority enjoy them enough to where now GTA VI is the most anticipated entertainment product of all time. You're allowed to not like a game but your taste is not always gonna align with what others like. I'd say if it confuses you that much then it's probably just best to ignore it completely, that's what I do with games I don't like

I still want to know what OP meant by "pound for pound". I would assume in the video game development context it would mean budget? But I'm pretty sure RDR2 had a huge budget, probably top 5 or 10 of all time considering its content and polish.

The cutscenes and quests in GTA3 were way shorter and more simple so it never gets annoying. It wasn't until San Andreas that Rockstar drank their own Kool Aid and started pretending that people cared about their mediocre writing (and this got way worse with GTA4 and GTAV). The game also stood out because of how free and responsive the world was in comparison with other games of that era. Also, driving cars is more fun than tapping X constantly.

Rockstar gameplay is just classic Max Payne but significantly worse and much more sluggish. TLOU made several big changes to the RE4 formula and the cutscenes primarily just exist to hide loading screens.
