Playing it for the first time. It's better than 3, worse than NV. Settlement building is surprisingly good despite being heavily kneecapped by jank in vanilla. I don't like having a voiced protagonist, and the new perk system is kind of dumb. But it's a fun game for what it is. I'm genuinely enjoying it a lot more than ToTK, as crazy as it feels to say that.

It is a decent game. Far Harbor DLC is the best part, don't be afraid to do it before you burn yourself out.
Although I don't like adventuring with a companion, some of them are good characters with interesting quests especially the French one.

Personally, I would have preferred if they removed the main story and made it focused on your settlement instead. They could have made Sanctuary the default settlement that rebuilds itself, for people who don't want to engage with the building system, but allow you to center your story anywhere you choose.
You'd go around collecting companions and sending them back to your settlement, they interact with each other, give you their unique quest. Meanwhile the BOS invades and starts spreading, fighting a war against the other faction, and you can pick a side or fight both.
Main story missions would involve searching for unique components to build settlement defenses that give your side an upper hand in the war.

Fallout 2 had some serious writing when it came to the power dynamic between the cities of the big circle. Vault City, Redding, New Reno and NCR are way more interconnected than the cities in Fallout 1. I've found 4 to be probably the best "modding platform" that a modern video game has ever been, with respect to just the scope of the content that mods add to the game itself. Morrowind I would say is maybe equal? Though actually, surprisingly, Morrowind is having something of a major modding revival right now, but that's another thing.

Fallout 4 with a solid mod install (my current modlist is like, over 1300 I think?) surprisingly very stable, has a lot of content, and does a lot of ok shit. I would say that the biggest drawback is that the actual loop of going, shooting, looting, all in the service of building stuff, is skimpy to the point of being kind of boring, and obviously the base game story is unsalvageable dogshit, as is Nuka World (Far Harbor is tolerable).

I don't know, man. Could you even do a Fallout 5? Like, I know you could MAKE it, but could it actually be a thing that meaningfully builds on the past? Do you really think Bethesda could give you a game with a bigger world, better narrative, better building/other wasteland mechanics, all while being stable and not a crash-prone piece of jank? I don't know if I do.

Also, side point: I fucking despise that at least 50% of all mod content is just "lol i gave female NPC big titties lol".

But if there's a Fallout 5 we're not going back to Fallout 4 level of gameplay. Starfield ruined exploration and made gun handling and shooting mechanics much worse. Fallout 5 will be closer in quality to Starfield then Fallout 4.
I don't think we can expect Bethesda to ever make a good game again. Not when Todd's magnum opus dream project that was allowed an extra 2 years in the oven, unlike any other Beth title in history, was fucking Starfield.
Fallout 4 plot was very fucking stupid at times thanks to Emil being a piece of shit incompetent hack but we had no idea how good we had it when it came to everything else in the game. Now we'll be getting an even worse nonsensical plot AND dogshit gameplay.
This is all Todd's fault. He used to be based and didn't let this shit fly in the past. Now he's content with mediocrity. Bethesda IS capable of writing good stories. Just look at Far Harbor, it's closer to FNV than vanilla FO4 or FO3. And they ARE capable of making fun gameplay just look st Skyrim and FO4.

But Fallout 3's worst sin is that it's just as bad of a RPG as Fallout 1 and 2, thoughbeit. Like if they were gonna update the game into being a shooter in a campier, "pulp sci-fi mag came to life and is grim" version of the setting, they'd try a bit more to lean on such things and expand the mechanics to be a bit more dynamic, or go shallower in favor of pumping the action, but instead it's just the Interplay games but 3D and a worse story.
