DoA 3 still tried at the beginning but the Xbox exclusivity gave americans full power to pigeonhole it as a titty non respectable game.
So they accepted it and made Xtreme Beach Volleyball and that was the shift.

It had a great fighting system with a lot of hot women, especially since some of the Dead or Alive titles became exclusives for the Xbox consoles when Xbox had the edge over the Playstation in terms of graphical power and smoother gameplay. I wonder how much of Team Ninja's success with their souls-like with diablo style loot formula has led to them abandoning their older franchises. The suits in charge may see no need to make a new Dead or Alive if a game like Nioh 3 will sell significantly better. It was ahead of its time with scummy microtransactions but if you go back and look at them they are actually more generous than modern live service games. Dead or Alive 5 and 6 sell a much higher amount of higher quality costumes than Tekken 8 or SF6 and for much lower prices.

e.g. One costume for Dead or Alive 6 costs £1.70. That's half the price of a costume in Tekken 8.

As for the costumes for everyone you are very right. For comparison, Tekken 8 makes a generic costume that can be worn on every character of that gender (so every time they make a new costume set, it's just one costume for males and one for females). Whereas DOA 5/6 always made unique costumes for each character. Tekken also does unique costumes but all of them are just copy-pasted from previous games, and even then they are so insanely bad at making them that more than half of the characters in Tekken 8 still don't have a unique costume of their own, a year and a half after release.

I am seriously playing these games because I am a Martial Arts nerd and I like the implementation of actual Martial Arts moves with the mechanics. I just have no fucking idea how to play it properly and I jobbed through DoA1.

The very basics to DOA's gameplay comes down to their triangle system. Holds beat strikes. Strikes beat throws. Throws beat holds
Defense will be full of knowledge checks against your opponent's moveset. You can simply block or even outspace using sidesteps and back/dashes. For the risker stuff, holds work on a 3 level system (high, mid, low) against strikes. Holds will also get you out of stun from attack strings, with the risk of taking more damage if you miss.
As for offense, don't sleep on throws as they can do pretty good damage, especially if they're used as counters (before your opponent could recover from their attack or a whiffed hold). There are also stage throws which may give you an opportunity for a combo or just simply add more damage. A source of guaranteed damage will come from launchers, which should let you do a combo on them. Some attack strings can be delayed between attacks, to help bait your opponent into whiffed holds.

Laws don't always make a lot of practical sense, and something like "We're going to change Sweden's definitions for child pornography" is a political hot potato that no politician is going to touch, for fear of being accused of making it easier for regular people to have sex with kids. So these laws were probably implemented decades before when social standards were much more conservative, and no one has dared to touch them since.
