Readers added context they thought people might want to know:

John Romero does not work at a gas station or live in Section 8 housing. He enjoys vintage gas station memorabilia. This photo was taken years ago.

I mean if he runs the gas station then I'd call it humble living anon. You already made history, you dont have to continually make more history as an obligation.
Like that Ron Weasley fellow had his last headlines be just him giving out ice cream. God bless. People who try to keep reaching for peak heights are the REAL hacks Id say

He needed to get a 9 to 5 job after all his battle toads games tanked. Tragic story really. But this can happen to you too.

It's fun. Next county over to me, there's this old Exxon gas station sign in the middle of nowhere, basically this tiny, out-of-the-way community...not found on most maps and never a major highway, has this house that once had gas pumps out front and had a lit Exxon sign near the road (not that tall, maybe 10-20 feet). I would love to buy that house if only for the thrill of restoring the connection from the house to the Exxon sign, and turning it on just for fun. I would also accept Shell signs prior to 2003 and Chevron signs prior to around 2004.

Daikatana. And then later on he couldn't commit to a real comeback & he produced the vaporware known as Black Room, cementing his legacy of a has been. Maybe never was, thus receiving the hack status to anyone with functional brain cells. He could never evolve beyond doom and quake mapping and so we get the hardly impressive SIGIL stuff which is probably worse than a lot of actual fan content. Supposedly he has a new FPS game in the works on Unreal Engine 5. But i reckon it's another vaporware.

He never recovered from Daikatana. He still made enough money to be set for life and just dropped it. He became a mediocre modder of the games he made in the early 90s. Honestly better than dragging your reputation further by releasing trash. Kojumbo would still have legendary aura had he stopped after MGS3.
