Vignette is such an appalling effect. Worse than motion blur, film grain and chromatic aberration combined.

only played the story for about half an hour
played online for 2 weeks straight and haven't touched it again, I reminisce about it sometimes though. Hunting for pelts until I unlocked the camp wagon, sniping anybody I came across, getting hogtied and thrown off a cliff by a random bounty hunter. I think I only grinded money so I could buy more outfits. Favorite video game map and setting.

Those clouds look a bit worse than I remembered, but the weather was really stunning. Seeing a rainstorm come at you across the valley etc

It looks good when it's real film grain in a movie that's there because the movie was shot on actual film. Looks terrible every single time when it's fake film grain that's been added as an effect to a game.

Any examples? I like it in pretty much every game that's ever used it as a deliberate visual choice.

Tightly designed open hubs are better. Cram everything important into one smaller location, therefore it's ACTUALLY fun to explore. Nothing ever feels empty, all the details are rolled up into important areas. I guess i should say that i like open maps that feel closer to your standard level design. But connecting everything in a logical and natural way. Non linearity doesn't have to feel so empty all the time.

The graphics and gameplay are fine in my opinion, better than fine. The story is just such an insufferable wannabe HBO piece of shit that squandered the opportunity for an awesome cowboy story and instead stuck us with hours of directionless grief and vain grasping questions of mortality ultimately signifying nothing.

Even that said, the open world itself is good. I think it would have benefitted from the Bethesda formula:
>character creation for your cowboy pc (use the one from online)
>pick stats, choose custom backgrounds like orphan, miner child, adopted indian etc
>brief origin sequence starts you somewhere in the world to explore at will
>take on work, gamble, hunt or roleplay as your chosen profession with more fleshed out minigames for coal mining or blacksmithing, barkeeping etc in addition to the existing bounty hunter, moonshiner
>stumble across a "main" quest at some point or perhaps multiple possible main quests depending on things like honor or allegiance
>have your choices actually AFFECT the world in some meaningful way beyond how law enforcement treat you
>have the civil war break out and the map is suddenly criss crossed by trenches and artillery, player has to pick a side and resolve it if they want to stop getting blown up by cannons all the time
>let the player go eradicate the last indians or help the indians scalp all the wypipo for the fuck of it
>go nuts and add a legacy system so you can marry a townsperson, give birth to a child who takes over for you when you die with stat buffs based on lessons you gave them/heirloom items you left behind
>go even more nuts and add a shadow of mordor rivalry system with random gangs of bandits and moonshiners popping up and forming generational feuds (or alliances) with the player's family
>yes i know its fucking patented fuck that shit so much
