For well over a decade, the Steam release of HL1 had HD models on by default, had texture filtering by default, AND had gl_overbright turned off.

Many people noticed that the game looked "dull" or "dark" but most never realized it was because gl_overbright had been set to 0, so they ruin the game's look with the contrast and brightness sliders.

Left is UE5 and right is GoldSrc.
Shadows and light give it out fast. I've played enough HL1 and Sven coop for several years to just know which one is original engine.
UE5 has soft looking shadows with lighting, it looks realistic and pretty smooth, while GoldSrc is primitive and got low shadow resolutions which makes them look sharp and very obviously fabricated, and on top of that, the lights go directly to each direction of lighting the area circularly. Circular lighting in this case is UE gimmick, GoldSrc doesn't do that unless you come up with your own adjustments.

1. The shadows in both images are static lightmaps that were rendered and smoothed out when the map was created by the devs.
2. The right is UE5 because it fucks up the transparency of the walkway grating; notice how the yellow-black bars vanish through the grating on the right.

In software, the overbright effect is hardcoded into the visuals.
In hardware, OpenGL had to come up gl_overbright to accomplish this effect.

Half-Life might not have shipped when gl_overbright existed yet, but in software the 0-200 brightness is default and the intended look.

In a game like HL1, with such low-resolution textures the filtering makes it no longer pixelated but the clarity goes down and everything has this smeary look to it. N64 games are similar in this regard (again, bilinear filtering on low-res textures).

Why do people say this? I'm playing a UE game right now and it's probably the best performing game I've played all year. Stable 144fps. And the stuttering memes about said game only happen during obvious area transitions for like a solid second.

Are you sure you guys don't have a Windows issue?

Because of the drawn shadows on the walls and ceilings.

I don't like low res texture filtering. There, I said it. That's why I infinitely prefer the PS1 over the N64 and play HL1 with texture filtering off even if it's wrong.

unreal engine games only seem to have problems with nvidia cards. i suspect it's less of an issue with the engine, and more of an issue with nvidia drivers.

Why not? You don't need to use metahumans and megatextures and lumen and nanite and GI. You can just use UE for all it's other features that speed things up and make games more simple to devlop.

It's in EA, and ran acceptably on a GTX970. There's used to be a full minute of loading in the hallway connecting offices to labs before the devs addressed the optimization issues. It's not an engine problem and it's not a permanent problem.

I'm not sure about Nanite but Abiotic Factor does use Lumen/GI, which is the main reason it struggles a bit on lower end PCs.
While it does invoke the retro 3D style, the actual visuals are way beyond that era of games, largely due to the dynamic lighting/shadows and reflections.
