What gave it away? The texture filtering. OpenGL/OG DirectX is way cleaner at AF than DX12.

What's your point. Unreal has literally dedicated tools to port any engine into it with all its bullshit.
Moreover, unreal is literally a picture engine. Every, fucking, time, anyone presents something made on unreal it looks amazing in pictures, photo realistic graphics, but the second they start playing that it immediately reeks of the exact same slop that you've seen countless times.

Left one has no sharp shadows which indicates lumen is being used. Right one has sharp shadows, low shadow map resolution and you can tell it uses point lights by how the light illuminates the wall in an unrealistic way(light source is square, shadow on the wall is rounded).

Left is UE5, right is GoldSrc.

Left has gl_overbright enabled which is emulating the intended software look of the game with brightness values between 0-200 rather than 0-100.

It was like bloom but it only effected lightmaps and textures.

For well over a decade, the Steam release of HL1 had HD models on by default, had texture filtering by default, AND had gl_overbright turned off.

Many people noticed that the game looked "dull" or "dark" but most never realized it was because gl_overbright had been set to 0, so they ruin the game's look with the contrast and brightness sliders.

Left is UE5 and right is GoldSrc.
Shadows and light give it out fast. I've played enough HL1 and Sven coop for several years to just know which one is original engine.
UE5 has soft looking shadows with lighting, it looks realistic and pretty smooth, while GoldSrc is primitive and got low shadow resolutions which makes them look sharp and very obviously fabricated, and on top of that, the lights go directly to each direction of lighting the area circularly. Circular lighting in this case is UE gimmick, GoldSrc doesn't do that unless you come up with your own adjustments.

Top is what it looked like for a long time, throughout the introduction and rise of streaming and youtube.
Bottom is how it is supposed to look and how it originally looked before Steam.

The current Steam HL1 anniversary update has made overbright an option in the video settings called "Shaders" for some reason, but it is enabled by default.

Two things:
1. The shadows in both images are static lightmaps that were rendered and smoothed out when the map was created by the devs.
2. The right is UE5 because it fucks up the transparency of the walkway grating; notice how the yellow-black bars vanish through the grating on the right.

In software, the overbright effect is hardcoded into the visuals.
In hardware, OpenGL had to come up gl_overbright to accomplish this effect.

Half-Life might not have shipped when gl_overbright existed yet, but in software the 0-200 brightness is default and the intended look.

HL1 should have similar community mods that make the visuals in hardware look like software with the performance increases.

The CPU has to plot each pixel at the right color on the screen per frame by itself, so color depth and resolution is crushed.
I like the starker colors if the banding could be eliminated in hardware, and having the original water/acid/toxic texture with ripples and waves.

Left is GoldSrc because the lighting is flat. GoldSrc can't do lighting in the right pic. Assuming it's all dynamic.
Unless it's prebaked and for some reason UE5 lights aren't light sources but just props. You can very easily fake a result like that.

I'm not arguing against texture filtering in general, wtf?
In a game like HL1, with such low-resolution textures the filtering makes it no longer pixelated but the clarity goes down and everything has this smeary look to it. N64 games are similar in this regard (again, bilinear filtering on low-res textures).

Transparency on the grate texture - some would say the gratest - is what proves this is UE5, made in America by hardworking Americans. Jobs are coming back! Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I'm not sure about Nanite but Abiotic Factor does use Lumen/GI, which is the main reason it struggles a bit on lower end PCs.
While it does invoke the retro 3D style, the actual visuals are way beyond that era of games, largely due to the dynamic lighting/shadows and reflections.
