Want to make some rooms for you and anons to play?
Go to "friends", "Register a Friend" and add the friend code of the host. Press a and then b to back out to the wifi menu, then go back to "Friends", "Find a Friend" and click them. You should now be in the lobby and should wait for others. Eazy! Btw for anyone wanting to make a open lobby in this game, just go to friends, and press the + button. read the message and select ok. just post your friend code in the thread and others can join.
(note: if it says "unable to join" the lobby is currently racing, you need to wait some minutes for the races to finish and the lobby to open again)

yesterday was a success suprisingly so i'm setting this up even though it's a little early, just so anons that want to join can prepare beforehand. if you want to add me my friend code is 1638-1104-8607, i will probably be around 21 CEST and host some rooms if needed (but anyone can host too whenever you want, or you can join random which is always open)

Here's a guide for people who want to play RetroRewind 6 on Dolphin but faced bugs when following the steps in the OP. This assumes you have a working version of Dolphin. (as in, you can launch the vanilla MKWii ISO without issues)

A tip for future hosts, remember to let people know when you're going to start the room in threads. The chatroom in MKWii proper has a "Let's wait 3 minutes" message, so I usually default to waiting 3 minutes before starting.

WheelWizard crashes upon installing, forcing me to wait all over again. If that happens to you, install it manually using Dolphin's Riivolution patch feature.
Also make sure you have RetroAchievements turned off (or at least Hardcore mode), that was causing the fuck ups I had yesterday.

Another possible issue is that Wheel Wizard installs itself and the RR mod correctly, but still sends an error message. A possible fix for that is to ensure you have the latest stable build of the emulator

Melee has Akaneia and Brawl has Project Plus, but the process of hopping online is less streamlined compared to MKWii Retro Rewind if I remember right because the former needs Netplay (I don't think Slippi supports mods like that) while the latter also needs Netplay because it uses Wiimmfi for WFC, which requires a NAND dump to login.

Thundercloud was replaced with a Mega Thundercloud in this mod. It makes smaller rooms much better since 2nd and 3rd in a 3 person room don't get immediately screwed over, and also changes the balance by making it so people actively aim for the person with the Mega cloud to get the reward.

So I tried in both Dolphin and using Wheel Wizard, but when I try to go to Multiplayer or Wiimmfi, it just tries to connect to the Nintendo WFC bullshit. Did I miss something in the config?

As I said, I downloaded the mod manually, loaded the Riivolution xml and started the game. Wiimmfi is there by default. I then tried Wheel Wizard with the same results. I'm at a loss, as this is all from a clean install.

>excessive anticheat DRM mentality that still forces you to use a disc, even though the Wii is 17 years old so Nintendo doesn't profit off the game anyway and disc drives (and in the Wii U's case, entire NANDs) are dying, so the barrier of entry is much higher.
>course lineup is bad, Mushroom Peaks is notable but a lot of high quality new courses don't make the cut while low quality "historical" courses are still in. Modern modpacks have much better course lineups than what CTGP continues to keep in

Apparently everyone in his staff team wants Dolphin support but he put his foot down on this one for anticheat/"integrity" and antipiracy. This one's the biggest hurdle for CTGP that led to the playerbase dying, because as the Wii gets older less and less people are willing to boot up their old system or buy a new one alongside the disc just to play one mod. There's also some drama regarding Bean himself dating an underageb& and Chadderz going trans or something, but I don't care too much about internet drama, the mod itself stagnated.

Retro Rewind is the one that actually has players for random WWs, but other mods like CTGP-Classic (a fork of CTGP that allows Dolphin players to play using Retro Rewind's servers), Insane Kart Wii (has a ton of courses and options, but uses Wiimmfi so you need a NAND dump to play online on Dolphin), and novelty gimmick mods like Formula Kart Wii (which makes every track 50 laps) are also popular enough.
I wouldn't really bank on finding other players for non-Retro Rewind mods, the other choices tend to be for offline casual, or for more serious players to mess around with in friend rooms.

Forgot to mention Deluxe. That one feels the closest to CTGP in terms of what it sets out to do. It has 700 or so CTs and the quality is still kind of iffy, but having more courses means more opportunities to get good ones, and it supports other things like built-in custom skins for characters. It's probably the second most active after Retro Rewind since it uses an AltWFC fork that makes it easily accessible.

In terms of other Mario Kart mods, Double Dash has MKDD Plus, which is a course expansion hack. Nothing else seems to be changed for the most part, however.
7 has CTGP-7 which adds a bunch of new courses into the game just like the other mods, but also includes item balance changes (the readdition of fake item box and Mega Mushroom) alongside alt characters that actually show up in multiplayer. It's got a niche and also works on Citra (and its forks) but 7's nowhere near as big as Wii so usually it's just one active WW room.

i'm not sure, i chose retro rewind because it's full open source and some anon showed it to me, but mostly for player count. there are quite a lot of courses too, every mk kart to some of 8 plus 80 custom tracks and it's also rebalanced, so i don't think it's that much of a problem desu. we're having fun so far

Finally got Wheel Wizard to install. Doing it with Riivolution patches would ultimately end up crashing on some courses (and might've been a reason why I kept disconnecting), so I had to do it sooner or later.
I did end up getting a new friend code out of it, so if you registered my old code (>>713924715), get rid of it.

For what it's worth, it's still not too hard to keep up with meta players with non-meta picks both due to the character stats barely mattering and because of how heavily buffed karts are.
Also see quite a bit of Daisy love on /v/ lobbies even though she's also "meta", but I think she's become a lot more niche lately since heavies dominate most courses and most people here are picking out of genuine love anyway.

Much more popular than Wiimmfi due to the ease of access thanks to Dolphin support since it uses a Wiilink WFC fork. It's also one of the only custom track packs to actually get players in for randoms now. Worth mentioning however that the Kart balance changes, Mega Thunder Cloud and the VR system update (now goes into 5 digits instead of capping at 9999) are applied.

They'd have to find a way to make DS Download Play netplay work. The problem with DS is that the online service only supports 4 players, locks out a lot of courses, changes the item balance and forces 100cc. With Local Play rules there are no restrictions.
