Why do Digimon games relegate evolution to outside of battle? This is such a missed opportunity, especially for a franchise that has de-evolution and complex evolution trees. Instead, changing forms should be a choice that happens mid-fight, as it escalates in tension.

adventure for PSP had that. so did DW3 and survive
anyway, in general evolutions in battle make no sense. since unevolved units are weak sauce, you're gonna want them evolved 99.999% of the time if you want to stand a chance. transformation sequences waste time, so having the battle start with them already transformed makes infinitely more sense
besides, with the way the story RPGs work, your resets to 1 with each evolution (you can stats on level up) and you gain/lose stats when you evolve/devolve. keeping digimon at rookie as a base would clash with the system

When you say there's a lot of things based on Chinese or Japanese mythology in media you're kind of begging the question. In reality it's mostly the same few actually known mythological figures being referenced like Nezha, Wukong, Amaterasu, etc rather than covering these mythologies broadly speaking. Ofcourse there'll always be cultural references from the writers, developers and artists in the game, but for the most part they would just be going for tried and true options most of the time. The same is true for the players and viewers, they'll always choose the familiar over the unknown. It's just marketing, really.

But secondly, I disagree with you. Shakamon, Erlangmon, Takutomon, Nezhamon, Kaguyamon, and Amaterasumon all have pretty human proportions, just with armor over bits. Devimon's actual arm proportions are so lanky and long that they don't fit human at all. Vamedemon is kinda similar to a lesser extent, but with the arms also being thicker/wider with the forearm and hands to a non human degree.

Even something like Angemon is often depicted with limb lengths that are unhuman, and has the gross embeded metal orbs that still keeps some of the digimon grunge.

Dukemon’s a knight of holy digital justice wielding a holy-lance and virus-purging shield, while Mirage is like-wolfman Iron Man with a shoulder cannon and glowing reactor chest. I assume someone at Bandai thought, “looks edgy, slap the logo on it,” and then never followed through.

For what is is, which is a purely episodic, villain of the week horror themed show that starts out as just kinda spoopy and increasingly delves more into actual horror and tense moments over time, it is well executed. The human characters and their relationship with their digimon are pretty fun, too

However, and this needs to be stressed, it has basically fucking zero overarching plot or narrative and every tease it gives to one is a fucking lie that goes nowhere
