It was played straight. That's the issue with the later Sonic games, they weren't played straight and had to downplay the more serious moments because forbid a story with stakes treats said stakes as an actual issue.

the thing is that SA2 took itself seriously because it was confident in the story it was delivering.
It was a weird, cringe story about mascot costume cartoon animals saving the world, and they commited to it every part of the way. That made it kino and autistic little children had no choice but to fall in love with it.

That's the problem with sonic stories afterwards. they weren't confident, they werer ashamed of what they were, they had to break tension with dumb jokes constantly undermining itself out of rejection of what they really are underneat. Always cringe, never achieving the kino.

Guess that's why Sonic Frontiers and Shadow Generations snagged so many of those kind of fans, old and new, once again. Both of those hard commit to their over-the-top anime action movie plots and are far better for it.
