People are pissed that the statement effectively reads "please we're working on the next part of FFXIV please look forward to it".
That next part being 8.0, but as people are pointing out what about the immediate term? What about 7.3 .4 and .5 that's still another 1year and a half at least of wait time until 8.0.
We already waited through 6.x content drought for the hope that Dawntrail was going to be a banger and it just wasn't, it absolutely wasn't worth the wait so people are not going to do that again in the 'hope' that 8.0 will be better.

I like that idea, or and I know this would be work but the test is separate the jobs and give people options.
So what I mean specifically here is in PVP they gave each job a new combat actions streamline the jobs, making the combat faster e.t.c. you press the same button and it does your rotation for you or you string together combos far easier.
It seems really simple but I recommend people trying out Reaper in PVP to see that yes on the surface it's simple but if you master Rpr in PVP knowing you are basically a god.

The point I'm making here is pve combat, the jobs are designed around high end content like Ultimate's and Savage, so anything below that it feels boring and unsatisfying, my solution would be to try and give separate job packages/ options depending on the level of content you're doing so they wouldn't need to change their encounter design but now you don't have to be stuck to Savage and Ultimate pve job design out in the Open world for Fates or doing normal dungeons.

The XIV playerbase is easily swayed by narratives, which is how they ended up in XIV to begin with, but you just need to take a step back and say - okay. This expansion wasn't my favourite. I'll unsub and come back for the next cap. There's no urgency. If the next cap is bad, unsub for that one too.

No need for that. Anyone with a shred of sense uses trust botting to get it done. Every time you notice someone in your FC or friends list running the same easily-solved dungeon a dozen times a day, you know exactly what they're doing. Even if you don't have or won't use bots, you can grab the standard two-pack pull of mobs, wait for your tank trust to pick them up, and then retreat a safe distance and afk until they kill them. No engagement on your part required at all outside of walking and fighting the bosses.

As far as old content, I think the best option would be to declare it legacy content with it being second priority. Give a 'new start' so people can either bring in their WoL or make a new one, and essentially just go from basic. If they're actually reworking the entire system, people are gonna have to relearn it anyways. Hit every class with a redesign.
I doubt they'd do it, but I think it's the best option for the health of the game.

I've liked it so far, though I'm doing it intermittently. I think there are a wide enough number of encounters that I know enough to be able to react while not knowing everything it does. My only real problem is probably that it feels uninteractive with others. After finishing HW they compressed and combined the following planned expacs. Mhigger/Doma, Source/First, Hyd/Zod. It was partly because of how long shit took and the severe chop that patch story content got after complaints from people having to go through ARR patch content.

Killed is an overstatement, but DT had a lackluster story with multiple issues in the writing. That's the biggest problem since XIV is a narrative driven game. When the story is bad, focus leaves that and goes on everything else, and because the patches leading up to DT, 6.X, were lacking content due to manpower being used for XVI/Graphics update, the places that focus landed looked worse. This is exasperated by how long there is between patches.
It's not that DT alone was enough to 'kill' it, it was just the straw that broke the camels back.

Y'shtola got her shit pushed in again and again, it is no surprise her youthful spirit got kind of broken, especially during HW where she basically died, got pulled back but had to cope with having lost her eyesight. Still made it work, still went forward and tried to support the one thing she unconditionally believes in. You. Sort of related, but I had an idea once for some expansion where the Scions are the rolequest NPCs, specifically they're trying to learn a new field or improve in one, and you're basically helping peer review and evcen mentor them. It'd come with lots of characterization interactions, downtime moments, but also cement the idea of the WoL not being just a coworker, a tool, or what not, but an equal and friend whom they value for their mind and guidance too. Some of the ideas I had were:

The female characters are still female. The romantic relationships are still all heterosexual. In fact, other than throwaway lines like 'Be on the right side of history", there was zero leftist virtue signalling. Dawntrail is simply a boring, milquetoast expansion, a result of what happens when you ask fraudsters to inform you on intricacies of differences in human cultures. At no point does the game, feature two gay male monster-races getting married and then flirting and getting ready to make out like WoW does.
