Maybe I'm just getting older, but watching this makes me realize why this game was so popular when it came out. It's interactive, despite how simple it is. The mushrooms react to being hit by your jumps from underneath blocks, you can kick or hold koopa shells, varying jump heights, running, going down secret pipes, being able to destroy blocks when transformed. Dare I say, it's brilliant for the time.

Be aware that you will need to jump not to just avoid enemies and obstacle but also death. And THEN you have another slightly bigger pit that forces you to prolong your jump. Note before the first pit, they put another tall pipe right after the first one for varying jumps that makes you long jump again just to ingrain the concept of jumping long in your moveset. Man... this shit really is elegant.

Introduce the idea of a death pit, as well as the idea that you can't just hold right and then jump when you run into something. Both of these at the beginning, so you can quickly get back to it if you're a retard who can't quickly understand these two things.

This was the first video game ever. Wow. Let that sink in.

You ever look at games from the mid-70s, how they were single screens with simple white sprites? And then they started adding really simple colors with games like Breakout and Space Invaders. Donkey Kong hits in 1981 and it looks vibrant compared to all the shitty ports that come after, especially compared to anything on the Atari 2600. The ZX Spectrum in 1982 uses CMYK colors but looks primitive.

And then in 1985, Super Mario Bros. looks insane with its smooth scrolling screen, fully-colored backgrounds jump physics, momentum, and different palettes between stages. It looks gorgeous. And then you have the original Zelda the year after with its overhead open world and deep gameplay, truly a sandbox. The Famicom came out in 1983 and it had a game like Battletoads in 1991 and Kirby's Adventure in 1993. It's truly amazing what they were able to get out of it compared to the beginning with its crunched arcade ports.
